GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Holy moly that was awesome! Burning Man 2014 is a wrap, and damn if we didn't wrap it up pretty, slap a glittery bow on it, douse it in gasoline and set a match to it.

So you've got playa dust in cracks and crevices you didn't even know you had. You're staring vacantly into middle space while people move around you. You can see their lips moving but haven't a clue what they're saying. Your reaction times are in the toilet. Your endorphins are still humming away. You have to fight the urge to hug the grocery store cashier.

And now that you're basking in the afterglow of the kaleidoscopic, pyrotechnic, hyper-socialized, brain-exploding brilliant maelstrom that was Burning Man, we encourage you to take that feeling and run with it. Live it. Participate in life like you do in Black Rock City.

For reals, bless you all for being who you are, for doing what you do, and for creating amazing things in the world, both in Black Rock City, and year-round. Stay tuned, because the Jackrabbits will keep your fires burning throughout the year, and get you ready for Burning Man 2015. Because remember ...

The Man burns in 365 days (or tomorrow, if you're so incilned)!

Honoring Alicia Louise Cipiccio

We'd like to dedicate this edition of the Jackrabbit Speaks to the memory of Alicia Louise Cipicchio, the 29-year-old resident of Jackson, Wyoming who suffered fatal injuries after falling under a large vehicle at Burning Man early Thursday morning of the event.

Event officials, including representatives of Black Rock City, the Bureau of Land Management and Pershing County Sheriff’s Office express their condolences and sympathies to Alicia's family and friends.

Feedback Loop: Tell Us What You Think!

Burning Man 2014 is in the bag! And now, we want your feedback. Your thoughts, concerns, questions and reflections will factor into our planning for 2015 and beyond!

The staff reads every word and your input becomes a part of our annual staff debrief process. We're always open to your feedback, but we'll be closing the Feedback Loop on October 15 to incorporate submissions in our review process. Submit your thoughts here:

Feedback Loop

Note: while we do send individualized responses to some submissions, we aren't able to respond to every one. Subjects generating a lot of public comment (ahem: Will Call) will be addressed in the Q&A section of the annual Afterburn Report.

Black Rock City Census — Please Participate!

Come to your Census! Please take moment to fulfill your civic duty as a citizen of Black Rock City by completing the Black Rock City Census!

The Census is anonymous. It is divided into three sections - if you don't have time to complete them all, please answer as many questions as you can!

It's important! We use data from the Census to learn about our community, show elected officials the positive economic benefit of Burning Man on Nevada, showcase the value of Burner-driven civic projects around the country and to demonstrate to the press that we are worldwide and growing.

Complete your Black Rock City Census form for 2014!

(NOTE: If the 2013 Census comes up, your browser's cached it from last year. Click this link to get to the right one.)

Lost and Found

Did you lose something on playa and want it back? Did you find something and want to return it to its rightful owner?

Don't despair — hundreds of happy Burner-and-stuff reunions have been achieved post-event, so try our Lost & Found process before you write your beloved possession off as gone for good:

Burning Man Lost and Found

Big thanks to the hard-working volunteers who process all of our Lost and Found stuff!

Ticket Issues

If you've got a ticketing issue that needs to be resolved, visit our Ticket Support System, and ... a) see if your question is already answered there, and/or b) contact our support folks for help.

Preferably in that order.

Either way, we'll do our best to get you sorted.

Post-Playa Tips Galore

We've assembled a collection of helpful post-playa tips to help you clean your stuff, your car, yourself, even your brain. We've even got some tips about getting yourself ready for next year.

Also, here's a nice article we came across about how to cope with post-playa depression (which is a very real thing and not uncommon, folks) - maybe it's up your alley.

And a pretty funny (because it's true) one, entitled "Do not divorce your parakeet yet".

Finally, one great cure for post-playa blues is to connect with other Burners.

Law Enforcement Feedback

Did you have or witness an encounter with law enforcement on the playa this year? Whether positive or negative, we want to know about it.

We use this information to work with law enforcement to improve our relations and their interactions with our community, and to ensure your constitutional and civil rights are being protected while in Black Rock City. And we can't be successful in that effort if we don't have your stories.

So please, take a moment to fill out and submit a Law Enforcement Feedback Form.

Lawyers for Burners

If you got arrested or received a citation on playa, you don't have to be in it alone. A grassroots volunteer organization called Lawyers For Burners may be able to help you with finding a lawyer or providing legal advice.

Visit their website for more information.

Tip: to contact LFB, fill out their Feedback Form (linked from the left hand column), and they'll be in touch.

West Nile Virus Found in Mosquitoes in Gerlach

The Washoe County Health District confirmed that mosquito traps in the Gerlach area have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The virus has been found in insects in Washoe, Clark, Mineral and Elko counties. There has been one human case in Nevada this summer, in Clark County.

Black Rock City itself was not exposed to the virus, but many participants stop in Gerlach on the way to or from the event and may have been exposed to the virus.

The Nevada Health Department has posted a related advisory.

To learn more about the West Nile Virus visit the CDC website or the Washoe County Health District website.

Burning Man Has Jumped the Shark! Oh nooo! (Oh ... no.)

So the big "controversy" (read: shameless clickbait) this year was that Burning Man has "jumped the shark" and that "rich tech elites" are ruining it for everybody, forever, and oh my God it's overrr whaaa! ... to which we respectfully say: yeah right.

Anybody standing out in the middle of the playa on any given night of the Burn, or cruising the neighborhoods of Black Rock City at any given moment would be hard-pressed to deny that rumors of Burning Man's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Is it changing? Yep. Always has been. But as Burning Man evolves and its magic appeals to an ever-broadening spectrum of participants, the diversity of human experience on playa expands while the underlying humanity we share stays the same. Need proof? Just look at the writings on the Temple walls.

But hey, don't take it from us ... take it from these commentators. Aaaand let the take-downs begin:

SFGate's Mark Morford: Burning Man is so very wrong

CNET's Dan Terdiman: Why fear of a tech elite-fueled Burning Man burnout is sooo wrong

Mashable's Chris Taylor: Burning Man Isn't What You Think, and Never Has Been

Burning Blog's Caveat Magister: Grover Norquist gets Burning Man – do we?

Building Black Rock City & the Burn Week

Say it with us now: "All Hail John Curley!"

For the last 7 years (he's having trouble believing that number, too), Curley has been documenting the building of Black Rock City and Burn week, producing consistently heartwarming, informative and touching dispatches from the playa, peppered with eye-popping photography.

Here are Curley's posts from Black Rock City 2014.

Thank you Curley for all the incredible work!

So Grover Norquist Went to Burning Man ...

So ... Grover Norquist decided to go to Burning Man this year, sending shockwaves through subsets of our community who apparently forgot that not only is Radical Inclusion the first of the Ten Principles, it's arguably the single most important principle that ensures the growth and longevity of our culture ... ahem, but we digress.

To everybody's great surprise, Burning Man survived Grover being there (can you believe it?!), and whaddya know? He got it.

To wit: "Some day, I want to live 52 weeks a year in a state or city that acts like this. I want to attend a national political convention that advocates the wisdom of Burning Man."

Check out Grover's recap of his playa experience.

Pro Tip: there are people in Black Rock City you may not agree with (gasp!) and yet we continue to do incredible things— that's what makes it beautiful.

Michael Holden once again killed it on playa, capturing some of the most stunning Burning Man photography you'll find.

Here are his dispatches from Black Rock City, and an amazing interactive panoramic of The Souk (at the feet of the Man).

Here's some spectacular aerial footage of the Man burn, courtesy of Eric Cheng.

Burning Man is Closed

While most (sane) people hunkered down in their camps, David C. Hill braved the muck to go out and shoot a cool video of Black Rock City in the afterglow of Monday's big rainstorm.

It's kinda like that first scene in "Vanilla Sky" where Tom Cruise is hauling ass through an empty New York City. Only slower and less dramatic, and no Tom Cruise. Check it out:

Governor Deval Patrick Quizzed on Burning Man

Here's a bit of a lark, cuz why not?

Massachussetts Governor Deval Patrick gets quizzed on Burning Man on NPR's "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" ... and he does pretty well.

Thank You for Supporting Art in Black Rock City!

Here's a big thank you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year ... whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa! We saw more art projects in Black Rock City than ever before (over 400 installations!), including more fire art than ever (over 100 pieces!), and 550 incredible mutant vehicles.

While it does seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we're getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So thank you!
