GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

This is the part where you move about absent-mindedly, perhaps procrastipacking, perhaps staring at the pile of dusty crap on your floor looking from item to item again and again, and your nervous system thrums with the vague anxious energy borne of ALL THE THINGS.

But damn isn't it exciting, because holy baby Jesus here we go, people.

OK, let's bring it down a level for a sec and throw out a few nuts and bolts. Key things to know before you go:

  1. Your travel and traffic plan.
  2. How not to get stopped by law enforcement along the way.
  3. Prepare for variable weather.
  4. Don't forget your tickets and your Vehicle Pass! (Not like we've ever done that before ... ahem.)

Make sure you know how you're getting to BRC (withOUT being early, because you'll end up hating life in D-Lot) and back out (ideally avoiding the heaviest Exodus hours). Obey the law, and you won't get pulled over (and quite possibly searched). And prepare for any and all weather conditions ... really ... it can be hella crazy and wackidoodle out there.

This just in: the Nixon store has let us know they're not fully functional gas-wise (e.g. they're running on one pump), so hit the I-80 Smokeshop in Wadsworth for your final gas needs instead.

OK so drive save (arrive alive!), be respectful of neighboring communities as you travel, and bring your A-game, people ... because it's game ON Burning Man 2014! As our friend Jess loves to say: "It's gonna be great!"

Need more inspiration? Check this out, from the amazing Roy Two Thousand.

Correction: Medical Marijuana in Nevada

Last week, in the Law Enforcement issue of the JRS, we stated that "The state of Nevada does not recognize medical marijuana cards from other states." In fact, the State of Nevada is beginning to recognize medical marijuana cards from other states as a result of recent legislation.

However, the federal government, and thus the BLM, still does not recognize state cards. And in Black Rock City, federal law trumps state law. So your medical marijuana card is NOT a get out of jail free card at Burning Man.

Burning Man Traffic Updates — Every Hour on the Hour

Want to know what the traffic situation is on Highway 447 or the wait time at the Gate? Beginning Sunday, August 24, we will begin broadcasting hourly traffic reports on BMIR 94.5 at the top of the hour. We’re aggregating real-time traffic information from Nevada Highway Patrol, Nevada Department of Transportation and our eye in the sky (ok, an IP traffic-cam on Poito Peak) to give you up-to-the-minute details on the drive to the event.

BMIR will be streaming via iHeartRadio again this year beginning Aug. 21. You can download the app here, and tune in on your mobile device before entering the communications dead zones north of Wadsworth and south of Cedarville for a no-snark traffic update. Long wait time? Consider sitting tight until the back-up lessens.

Wait? You want more? We’ll also be providing real-time traffic updates 24/7 via Twitter. Just follow @BManTraffic.

BMIR will also begin providing Exodus wait times and highway traffic reports on Saturday, Sept. 1 through Tuesday, Sept. 2.

RC Aircraft in BRC: Registration

Bojangles writes:

"Remote Control at Black Rock City (RCBRC) reports that registration for flying remote control aircraft (aka drones and UAVs) is full and there is a waiting list. Burning Man set a cap of 200 registrations for 2014.

If you are not fully pre-registered, do not bring your RC to the playa (the waiting list does not count as being registered). You will not be able to register it or fly during the event.

The RCBRC team also says briefings have been moved to the Airport and will now be 10 a.m. daily Monday through Saturday of the event. Pilots must attend a briefing to complete their registration and have their vehicles tagged. RCBRC staff will also be at the ARTery from 5-5:45 p.m. Monday through Friday to answer questions."

How to Send Snail Mail to Black Rock City

LadyK writes:

"Planning on mailing something? Here's the lowdown. We are the BRCPO, the Post Office in Center Camp working directly with the Gerlach Post Office. Here is the best way to process your mail. Address to:

PLAYA NAME AND BIRTH NAME (the name that will match your photo ID)
PHONE NUMBER (not the dead one in the bottom of your tent, but the number for someone who can answer when I call)
CAMP NAME
PLAYA ADDRESS (example 4:30&B)
C/O BRCPO (This is very important, NOT BRCPO9, NOT BRCPO3)
Gerlach, NV 89412

EVERY LETTER AND PACKAGE SHOULD HAVE A REAL WORLD RETURN ADDRESS.

Mail will be picked up daily at the Gerlach Post Office through Thursday 8/28/14.

Mail should be post marked no later than Saturday 8/16/2014 in order to get to the playa."

For more info, email LadyK.

Building Black Rock City: It's Getting Real

Señor Curley is still on playa blogging away about the building of Black Rock City. There are cones all over the place. The after-work parties are getting more ambitious. And there are still a few more surprises in store before the rest of us hit the playa next week.

The Wonderful, Weird Economy of Burning Man

The Atlantic has an interesting piece on the economic impact of Burning Man.

"Burners spend thousands preparing for the money-free event. But just as the desert community cannot fully escape capitalism, neither can capitalism remain untouched by the 'gift economy.'"

Meet Kim "Skipper" Corbin, Skipping Enthusiast

This is the sweetest thing ever. Adore this interview with Kim Corbin, founder of the Skipping Movement:

"My family and my Burning Man friends thought starting a skipping movement was a great idea. Skipping captures the energy and spirit of Burning Man. Out in the regular world it brings a piece of the playa home."

Audible Wasteland: Burning Man 2013, an Audio Journey

This is a cool medium. It's a 10-minute collage of on-playa sounds with touches of musical remixing. Jex (and Josh) write:

"Almost one year ago to date, Joshua and I were running around the playa with a recorder capturing soundscapes, bikes, art car tires, wind, art project bass tones, fire, the burn, thoughts, moments, tears, anxieties, and messages of love. The goal: to create a piece of audio magic that embodied the soundscape - sampling, creating drum kits, crafting music all with nothing but sounds from the playa and using the words of the Burners that inhabited the dust as the lyrics."

The Spoken Word Stage Wants Voices

Magenta writes:

"The Spoken Word Stage is a supportive, welcoming place to share your words — whether you are a seasoned performer, or so terrified of public speaking you quake at the mere thought.

Original poetry, storytelling, spoken word, soap-box rants, stand-up comedy, performance art, singer/songwriters - the more variety, the wider the range of human emotion, the more ideas that grace the stage, the better the stage is.

Help the Spoken Word Stage thrive with your original, unique words. That original part is important - we want to hear your words, stories, research, poetry and comedy, not somebody else's.

The stage is open from 11am-6pm from Monday till Sunday.

Email Magenta to schedule a 15 minute set on the Spoken Word Stage!

For sets of under ten minutes, sign up at the stage any time after 11am on the day you wish to perform for the first-come, first-served Open Mic.

The open-mic is from 5-6pm, Monday through Wednesday, and 4-6pm Thursday through Sunday."

Food Drive: Give Back to the Paiutes This Year!

Good idea, good cause. The kids over at Comfort & Joy write:

"When the festival is done, donate your leftover non-perishable camp food to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Food Bank, which helps local foster children, elders and victims of domestic violence.

As you drive through the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, look for Comfort & Joy’s bright Day-Glo flags decorating taco stands in Nixon & Wadsworth to find drop-off points for the Food Bank … and amazing fresh tacos.

Is your camp participating? How you can help:

  • Spread the Word!
  • Send each vehicle off with a bit of food to donate!
  • Tell your Burners to stop in Bunnie's Tacos in Nixon or Elaine's Spot in Wadsworth!
  • Get some great food!
  • Give some great food!
  • Spread the love!

Thanks!

Orgy Dome Creating Wristbands for Communicating Consent

The Rabbits regret missing And Then There's Only Love camp's post until it was too late for the Indiegogo campaign (Pro tip: make your JRS posts SHORT, and we'll be better at catching them). But we wanted to make sure you know about what they do. Shade writes:

"And Then There’s Only LOVE (ATTOL), the Burning Man theme camp famous for their 24 hour air-conditioned Orgy Dome, is looking to create a new meet and flirt area for couples and moresomes called Aphrodite's Garden.

For many couples, the Orgy Dome is a new experience or they just want to get out of their crowded RV or dusty tent and they don’t want to play with others. Other couples are looking for a new adventure and wish to explore sexual boundaries, while others are polyamorous and actively looking for other like minded groups to play with. How do you tell them apart in a dark dome?

Aphrodite’s Garden creates an area for lovers to meet and flirt or just relax before entering. This project allows us to provide "open to more" wrist bands for couples who want them when in Aphrodite’s Garden. This way effective communication can occur before people enter the dome.

The expanded Orgy Dome will be large enough to have separate sections for people looking to join others and those who do not want to be approached by anyone with whom they did not enter, creating an 'open to more' space and a 'just us' space. No area is a free-for-all. You still must always ask and receive enthusiastic consent before you touch.

The Orgy Dome is a sex-positive, consensual space for adult couples and moresomes to play during their stay at Black Rock City. The Dome is a safe, inclusionary, and exploratory environment that practices enthusiastic consent."

Donate to support Aphrodite's Garden on the ATTOL website.
