Wherever you happen to be on this solstice, as Earth careens towards its cosmic turning point, here's hoping you're doing your favorite things with your beloved humans, and imagining all the mind-bending wonders we'll create together in the year ahead. Once upon a time, the only way to build and playfully explore large scale artwork was by making the journey to Black Rock City. Fast-forward to now... Year-round and everywhere there are endless ways and places to encounter art inspired by Burning Man. It's popping up at public events, and in parks, cities and towns. Once a rare adventure, now you can gather your kids, your grandma, and that friend who never seems to make it to the Burn, and light up their minds with new ways of experiencing art. Curious? Dive into a new Journal post to meet artists whose work has traveled, and been loved everywhere it lands. And watch Art into the World, the latest Profiles in Dust documentary, to follow several artworks as they journey from Black Rock City to new homes. THEN hear a podcast interview with Black Rock City sculptor Michael Christian. It's all below. The Black Rock City Honoraria Program supports approximately 75 artworks annually, funded by the nonprofit Burning Man Project and generous donations from Burners like YOU. If you've been moved by art, donate to Burning Man Project today to ensure others can have that same opportunity. Your generosity brings more art, connection, and creativity to Black Rock City and the world. Also in this edition, meet recipients of the new Burners Without Borders Regional Events Civic Ignition Grant. If wrangling theme camps is your flavor of fun, set aside March 14 for the Camp Symposium. Yes, YOU can be a symposium presenter, producer, or moderator. All the goods are below. It was better next year.
Burning Man Art: It’s Closer Than You Think Whether at a museum, a light art festival, a Regional Event, or a street corner in a city near you, Burning Man art may be closer than you think. When Burning Man art comes to town, people show up en masse to engage, play, and learn — making the creation and experience of art more curious and hands-on. This has in turn increased the public demand for more participatory artwork in public spaces around the world. Meet artists whose work has journeyed from Regionals to Black Rock City, and from Black Rock City to communities everywhere. Watch the New Profiles in Dust Feature Art into the World Created by the all-volunteer Profiles in Dust team, Art into the World is a short documentary that follows a radical shift in the life cycle of Burning Man art. Through interviews with artists, city officials, and community members, the film explores how these once-temporary installations find permanent homes, transforming public spaces and illuminating the spirit of Burning Man far beyond the playa. Want the backstory? Read this Journal interview with Profiles in Dust lead Terry Pratt.
A Conversation with Artist Michael Christian on Burning Man LIVE Michael Christian's huge steel sculptures have graced Black Rock City for decades, then found forever homes in cities, festivals, and private collections. In a conversation with Stuart Mangrum recorded on playa, Michael delves into his storied history of making art, from a tree of bones to a 65-foot-tall tower. They tinker with the qualities of hubris and humility, and get real about why they keep returning to the collective happening in the dust.
Placement & Department of Mutant Vehicles Office Hours Are Back Black Rock City office hours are BACK. (Or maybe they never went away?) All are welcome to chat with Placement and the Department of Mutant Vehicles. Here's where you ask how to register that mutant vehicle, when the theme camp Statement of Intent opens, and anything else you're curious about.
