GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Y'know, used to be the months right after the Burn were pretty chill around BMHQ. It was kinda quiet. Well, that's long gone, tell you what. Now that we're working to foster Burning Man culture in the world year-round, there's no downtime anymore. But hey, it's pretty great work to be doing.

And YOU are part of it.

There are so many ways to get involved.

For instance, Burning Man is helping David Best and Artichoke Trust to create a Temple in Derry~Londonderry Northern Ireland, together with members of that community, with an aim to building cultural bridges and help heal a strife-ridden history. And they need your help to make it happen.

Meanwhile, our staffers are out in the field, giving lectures and talks about everything from the 10 Principles to community building to ritual, death and transformation, as part of our ongoing education program.

And (shhhh, just between you and us ...) we're working on a really really BIG project that will serve to tell the Burning Man story as it is today and into the future, and it's gonna be RAD. You'll know it when you see it.

On a more practical note, if you want to apply for a BRC Honorarium Art Grant for 2015, we're changing the process, and rolling it out in mid-November ... get ready, and watch for it!

The Man burns in 310 days! (But really it's burning year-round, dangit.)

Why Does the Man Keep Burning?

Burning Man co-Founder and Chief Philosophical Officer (we love saying that, it sounds so cool) Larry Harvey was invited to speak at the LongNow Foundation last week. LongNow, in case you didn't know, focuses on long-term thinking and ideas, and hosts a wonderful seminar series on a wide range of topics.

Larry spoke on "Why the Man Keeps Burning", and his talk was very germane to current events in the Burning Man community. Check it out:

Listen to Larry's talk on the LongNow site.

Did You or Someone You Know Lose a Camera at Burning Man?

This is one of our favorite games, which we call "Hey, I know that dude!"

In an effort to return lost cameras to their owners, we uploaded a small sampling of the photos from the cameras turned in to Lost and Found at the 2014 Burn. (We also still have just the data cards from the un-claimed 2013 cameras.)

If you lost a camera, go to the Burning Man Lost & Found Flickr album. If you see your photos, send an email to lostan...@burningman.com with the accompanying album number (“14-??? P") in the subject line.

Include a description of the camera make, model, color and any other distinguishing characteristics, and describe some of the photos that we did NOT post. If it looks like we have a match, we'll need your shipping info, or if you are in the Bay Area, we can arrange for a good time you to come by and pick it up.

Immediacy and Impermanence

Burning Man's Rosalie Barnes wrote this interesting piece about immediacy and impermanence. Here's a snippet:

"So with ambitions of some sort of a spiritual redemption, I went into this Zen Hospice Volunteer interview. And Roy asked me about Burning Man. I told him that in a way, we (the Burning Man community) deal with impermanence all the time. We build a temporary city out of the dust; in two months it is created, celebrated, disassembled and returned back to the dust."

Check it out.

Wisdom Has Costs

Jon Mitchell, still unsure about italicizing himself, has written a long story about his weird Burn Night over on Tales from the Playa. It's full of feminism, fuck-ups, and the wetting of pants.

“‘Oh, don’t worry about your bike,’ I said, stars twinkling in my head. ‘We’ll just keep an eye on it.’

What if I hadn’t said those words?”

Alistair Farland: Whilstiwasout

Alistair Farland published a fantastic full-screen gallery of his burn this year, which can be seen on his website, Whilstiwasout.

Farland camped with Journylizm, and we've learned that he was tragically killed in an accident while on a 10,000-mile motorcycle trip. Our condolences go out to all who knew him.

When We Were Kids

This is a real zinger of a short film made at AfrikaBurn. Yolande writes:

Once upon a time we didn’t worry about bills, deadlines, status and other silly adult things. We didn’t care what people thought and we were fearless. In a place far, far away, at a festival called AfrikaBurn, adults, once again, are given permission to play.

Burning Man 2014 - Born This Way

Cheese writes:

"Hi, This is our annual lipdub music video yearbook for 2014. The Burners in this one were all Born This Way! Hope you enjoy."

A 10-Year-Old's 1st Burn Art

A budding artist! Yobi Bear writes:

"Based on the adventures of a Burner participant interacting with The Man during a dust storm, with a drone, and when it's time to Burn. He wants us to ask ourselves, 'What IF the Man moved throughout the city during the day, then took his position on Playa at night?'"

BRC Honoraria Art Grants — New Process for 2015!

Burning Man Arts — the new department combining the Black Rock City Art Department with the Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) — will launch a new online system in mid-November designed to make it easier for artists to apply for honoraria grants for art destined for Black Rock City.

This year, applicants will be required to first submit a Letter of Intent (LOI), which will allow the Grant Committee to select which projects will be invited to participate in the full grant application process, saving everybody time and effort.

The system will go live in mid-November, and LOI submissions will be accepted for four weeks. The Grant Committee aims to inform artists if they are invited to participate in the full grant application process by the beginning of 2015.

All artists hoping to receive a Black Rock City honorarium will need to participate in this new LOI process.

More information will be made available via the Jackrabbit Speaks and on the Burning Man Arts web pages as the rollout approaches.

Ace in the Hole: Death of a Junkyard

Support this film celebrating a time-honored Bay Area artist institution. Yasi writes:

"Ace in the Hole is the story of a local junkyard owner Bill ‘the Junkman’ Kennedy, and how he helped countless artists in San Francisco's collaborative art and music communities achieve their dreams.

This is a story about a community evolving over 25 years in the most unlikeliest place and how the experiences here influenced SF Bay Area art and culture. There is also heartbreak and loss, as the battle with the landlady ensued and it became clear that Bill would have to close the gates of Ace forever. Ace in the Hole is a tribute to Bill and a recognition of all the contributions the freaks and geeks bring to our society.

Bill would let artists scrounge for parts, experiment with crazy ideas (like blowing up vacuum cleaners, just to see what happens!) and have punk rock shows that included picking up band members with a crane and floating them above the crowd. He was the facilitator of things that only happen in San Francisco and that could only happen in a junkyard. Many Burning Man projects came to life, went to the desert and came back to die at Ace Auto.

Known amongst his peers as the magical junkyard fairy, Bill would often say, 'If you're making it for art, help yourself,' and he would give away so much of the junk for free.

Help this film. Support the Kickstarter campaign.

Ritual, Death and Transformation: Lessons from Burning Man and the Zen Hospice Project — San Francisco, CA — Nov 8-9

Here's a fascinating talk featuring Burning Man's Rosalie Barnes, taking place at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco:

Ritual, Death and Transformation: Lessons from Burning Man and the Zen Hospice Project with Rosalie Barnes and Roy Remer

Temple, and Zen Hospice Project's spiritual practice of sitting with impermanence. Participants will bundle personal objects to mark a passage or honor a deceased loved one, and the workshop will culminate in a burn ritual of participants' creations.

Zen Hospice Project began helping people in 1987, and continues to offer programs and trainings that blend spiritual practice with service to the dying. Burning Man is world-famous for its fire art, and offers an annual tradition of building and burning a temple that honors those lost in the previous year. In this workshop, participants will create offerings to loved ones who have passed, discuss and meditate on the meaning of death in their lives, and explore art making and burning as a transformative experience.

The Women of Burning Man: Fueling Creativity and Community — San Francisco, CA — Nov 13

Get your tickets for this lecture by Burning Man co-founder Harley K. DuBois and artist Rebecca Anders, coming up at the California Institute for Integral Studies in San Francisco:

The Women of Burning Man: Fueling Creativity and Community with Harley Dubois and Rebecca Anders

Women hold pivotal roles in creating community around the world. Burning Man culture advances the role of women in creating community through art on the playa, during the annual event in Nevada and off the playa, through organizations such as the Flux Foundation, where volunteers learn skills such a welding while co-creating art projects. Please join Harley Dubois, co-founder of Burning Man, and Rebecca Anders, co-founder of Flux Foundation, for a conversation about female leadership as a catalyst for creative expression and community building.
