ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

This edition of the JRS marks the advent of a new era (on a couple fronts) ...
First off, now that we're a nonprofit, Burning Man files an annual tax return with the IRS (the Form 990), which is available to the public. We've got it on the Public Documents section of our website, along with a helpful (believe us) FAQ giving some explanation of – and insights into – what you're looking at (because yeah, this stuff can be confusing).
Second, we've added a new Burning Man Arts section to the JRS, which will be a window into the wonderful (and global) world of large scale and participatory art.
We hope you're managing to keep warm this winter, and if you're getting a bit down, just remember ... this awaits you.
The Man burns in 221 days!

Burning Man's Nonprofit Financial Information Released
 |
|
| |
The Form 990 is an IRS tax form that provides the public with financial information about a nonprofit organization. Essentially, it is the organization’s annual tax return. It is also used by government agencies to prevent organizations from abusing their tax-exempt status.
The 2013 Form 990 for Burning Man Project (BMP) represents a snapshot of the non-profit at the end of 2013. It includes information about the transaction that made BRC, LLC a subsidiary of BMP, compensation of staff, fundraising efforts and programming activities. A 990 is produced at the end of the year for the year prior.
Over time, our 990s will tell the story of where we’ve gone and what we’ve accomplished as an organization. Each year we will share these documents in the Public Documents section of our website. This is one of the primary ways we provide financial information about our organization, and one of the biggest ways Burning Man’s operations are more transparent as a nonprofit.

Clarification: Ads on Burning Man Videos
We got some helpful feedback from last issue's post about ads on YouTube videos about Burning Man (thank you, people!), and here's where we're at:
Burning Man culture is generally not cool with advertising. But we also want people to feel free to create videos however they want, with music that they choose. That said, be aware that YouTube automatically puts ads on videos that use copyrighted music. It's up to you, but if you use copyrighted music, your video is likely to get an ad placed on it, and that makes us far less likely to share it. We might, but it has to be an exceptionally awesome video. Otherwise, an ad will probably discourage us from sharing.
All that said, we're about as likely to completely avoid advertising as keeping you from seeing a billboard on your drive to the event — it's just a part of life. And while we'll do our best, sometimes you're going to run across an ad. Sorry ... sucks, we know.

Remembrance Plaque of Names of Burners Lost: 2014-2015
Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences.
This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to remem...@burningman.org. (Please DO NOT hit reply to this newsletter to submit a name.)
Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year's plaque.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

Wanna Ride? Vote for New Burner Express Pickup Locations!
Great news for Burners (on the West Coast, anyway)! Audrey writes:
"Tired of the long, taxing drive to the Playa each year? Want to take the bus but don't have a pick-up location nearby? The Burner Express Bus Program is looking to potentially expand its West Coast departure locations! For the past two years, the Burner Express has successfully bussed participants from Reno, NV and San Francisco, CA to Black Rock City. We are considering adding another location, but want to hear from YOU first!
Please fill out the short survey and tell us where YOU want to see the Burner Express next!
Happy and safe travels!"

The Morris Burner Hotel: Doing it Right in Reno
This is a fun behind-the-scenes. Check out those rooms!
"The Morris Burner Hotel is magical. It holds the feeling of Burning Man but it’s not in Black Rock City. Immediately upon entering their front door on 4th street in Reno you are welcomed home. Within moments you’re whisked away by your costumed bell hop who checks you in and tells you all about the space. The lobby is full of lounging burners, comfy chairs, and tons of art. It feels as if you’ve walked into any camp anywhere on the Playa."

Someone is Bringing A 747 Jumbo Jet to Burning Man
SFist got an interview with the delightful crazy people intending to bring a freaking 747 to Black Rock City this year (please note, any number of things could keep this project from actually happening, but they're gonna give it their best shot!):
"We’re not just dropping a 747 on the playa. There’s going to be some heavy modifications to it. This will be heavily mutated. It’s going to have some really unique interesting creative features. We’re getting a lot of help from some really interesting people who are really putting their creative stamp on this."

Building Pulse & Bloom: An Interactive Biofeedback Installation
It's always cool to see the inner workings of installations like this one. Samachine writes:
"This blog post details how much work is involved in building a large art installation on the playa, including custom hardware, steel works, transport, massive battery power, and assembly. Useful if you are planning your own art installation in the future."

Welcome Home: Burning Man 2014
Really superb visually guided tour. Mildly NSWF. Teapot writes:
"Personally, I was searching for some kind of spiritual enlightenment. What I actually found was a family, an appreciation for people and their stories, a love of the outdoors, a desire to create, a realisation of the things I’m capable of, 8 nights of raving and 8 days of adventure!"

NBC Profile on Artist Peter Hudson
Cool story on a great artist! Joe writes:
"I'm a longtime Burner, and a producer at NBC Bay Area News. I wanted to send you a link to a story I just finished on zoetrope artist Peter Hudson (whose projects I've worked on.) I spent many hours chasing him around as he was getting ready for the Playa this year."

What Are YOU Gonna Do About It?
'Tis the fallow season of the Burning year, and the Burner world goes into a bit of hibernation.
Or does it?
The nonprofit Burning Man Project is hard at work spreading Burning Man culture around the world, keeping the fires alive, and sharing the transformational power of this experience with more people in more places, year-round.
And YOU can be a part of it. Get involved! Find your local Regional Group, tap in, and get something going! Or, if you want to fly solo (sure, why not?) tap into your own playa experience, and share it with the folks around you. 2015 is off and running, so why not take the opportunity to affect some change in your corner of the Burnerverse?

Recruiting Volunteers for the Emergency Services Department
Black Rock City is one of the largest cities in Nevada during the Burning Man event. Unfortunately, as in all cities, emergencies arise. The Emergency Services Department (ESD) is a volunteer organization that responds to calls for medical issues, traumas, fires, and emotional crisis issues. We work closely with other Burning Man departments, our medical and fire vendors, and law enforcement to provide a robust net of public safety to the citizens of Black Rock City.
ESD provides communications / emergency dispatching, firefighting, first response medical care, and crisis intervention support to the citizens of Black Rock City. We accept volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds. Each branch of ESD has specific requirements needed to fill their positions. You can find out more about our department and our volunteer requirements by visiting our website.
ESD is interested in recruiting skilled professionals dedicated to public safety, preferably with a background in emergency service. If the idea of volunteering with other community-dedicated, fun-loving, energetic and professional emergency services providers is of interest to you, please select "Emergency Services" under volunteer team interest, and then select your particular area of interest, when you fill out our Volunteer Questionnaire.

#NOTETOSELF: Join the Project
|
 |
| |
We can never get enough of these kinds of projects. Teapot writes:
"Last year at Burning Man I asked 25 strangers to write a letter to themselves in the default world. This could be anything – whether it be a memory, a feeling, good advice for the future or just something they wanted to express to the “default world” version of themselves.
I invite you all to join me and spread the #NOTETOSELF project as far and wide as possible!
-
Find anything to write on and ask someone to write a letter to themselves in the “real world”
-
Take a photo of that person with their letter at that place and time
-
Ask them to write their address on the back then post it when you feel the time is right
-
Ask that person to do the same for someone else next time they have the chance
-
Lastly write one to yourself while you’re there!
Please Tweet or Instagram your photos using #NOTETOSELF or email xstati...@gmail.com so we can build an ever-growing online gallery that we can all look to when we need to remember a bit of happiness."
