EVENTS & HAPPENINGS:

GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

It's right ... around ... the corner. Can ya smell it? Can you feel the heat? The electricity? It's time, people.

Check out the honorarium art installations, art of Black Rock City and the Caravansary Souk you'll find on playa, and learn about the different art tours available. Then peruse the events and activities participants have in store on the Playa Events Calendar ... and add yours to the list!

As we come down to the wire, here's some key stuff to know. First off, the weather is being crazypants out there right now, and we could see high winds, dust (duh) and possible rain ... as a good radical-self-reliant participant, be prepared for anything!! Prepare for hot, cold, wet, dry, windy as hell, you name it.

If it rains, stay put until it dries out and don't drive on wet playa. Batten your stuff down at all times because the wind can come up and hurtle your crap down playa before you can blink an eye (pitch-poling carports? not cool.).

And remember, the Gate opens at 10am Sunday 8/24. Arrive earlier without an early arrival pass, and you end up in D-Lot, which sucks, and will only result in your getting into the city way later than you wanted. Yes, really.

Or take the Burner Express (ticket sales end August 16!) shuttle bus. And if you don't, please please please drive safely, and don't get pulled over by law enforcement.

Don't forget your tickets, your vehicle pass, and your open mind. Oh and some water wouldn't hurt either.

The Man burns in 16 days! (Hoooooly moly!)

Porta-Potties 101

Let us begin this nearly final pre-playa JRS on a ... business note, shall we? Hazmatt writes:

"Citizens of Black Rock City! This is your friendly reminder that absolutely nothing should go in the porta-potty that wasn't in your body (and of course single-ply paper)! This includes BABY WIPES (even the ones that say that they are flushable), tampons or pads, grey water, condoms, banana peels or other compostable items (unless, you know, you ate it first).

Trash in the potties results in a horrible experience for everyone involved. It can slow down and even damage the sanitary systems that make Black Rock City hospitable to human life. That is some instant karma there folks, just don't do it."

Time To Burn App Now Available

Time To Burn, the all-in-one playa app, is back for 2014. Terry writes:

"Mmmm...smell the goodness! This is the app that includes the survival guide, the What Where When information, the Rockstar Librarian Music Guide, a GPS enabled map of the city, camp listings, art listings, and your own personalized QR code so you can 'bump' in the middle of the playa. No internet required, of course."

Find out more about Time To Burn on Facebook.

Want to Avoid Getting Pulled Over at Burning Man? Obey the Law

Law Enforcement Officers in (and on the way to and from) Black Rock City are sworn to uphold the law. Just like in the real world, it’s up to Burning Man participants to know those laws and to follow them.

Study up on the Burning Blog.

RC Aircraft in BRC: Registration Full

Remote Control at Black Rock City (RCBRC) reports that registration for flying remote control aircraft (aka drones and UAVs) is full and there is a waiting list. Burning Man set a cap of 200 registrations for 2014. Pilots can continue to pre-register for the waiting list and will be assigned registration if slots open up.

“If you are not fully pre-registered, do not bring your RC to the playa (the waiting list does not count as being registered). You will not be able to register it or fly during the event.”

Dear Virgin

On the Burning Blog, Halcyon has welcoming advice for first-timers:

"Dear Virgin,

This post isn’t going to help you pack.
It isn’t going to tell you how to prepare for dust or stay lit at night. You’ve already read (or watched) all about that. But I do want to suggest some tips for the preparation of your state of mind."

Read (and watch) more on the Burning Blog.

Involving and Engaging Kids at Burning Man

Judi Morales Gibson has posted some great thoughts on kids at Burning Man on the blog. Check it out:

"From the very beginning, playa kids learn survival skills, playa ethics like Leave No Trace, and ultimately how to contribute to their community. When taught the Burning Man principles on playa, kids get it right away. They learn it, live it and incorporate it into their core values as they grow up."

Help the Oasis of Missed Connections Get to Burning Man

This piece is beautiful, it only needs a little more dough, and the fundraiser is almost over. Help 'em out. Paul writes:

"The Oasis is a tree of light in the deep playa. Long branches sweep towards the ground, illuminated from within by over 1300 color-changing LEDs. Each branch is encased in transparent vinyl, strong enough for a person to climb. At the base lies the Book of Missed Connections, a place to leave messages to those you have no way of contacting.

The Oasis crew is working hard but needs extra help to finish the project. Check it out on Kickstarter."

Giant Flaming Banjo, Anyone?

Three words: Giant. Flaming. Banjo.

"Burning Man: A festival in the desert with music but no live Bluegrass. Help get our portable stage and pickers there. Bluegrass Rules!"

Support live bluegrass on playa via Kickstarter.
