Havana, Jul 30 (acn) An
office for the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) will be
opened in Peru in October, even though the country is not a member
nation of the integration initiative.
Andean Parliament Representative Elsa Malpartida, from the opposition
Nationalist Party (PNP), said the new headquarters for the
cooperation mechanism, comprised of Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua and
Venezuela, will be established in the city of Tingo Maria, 560
kilometers east of Lima.
Malpartida said that among other endeavors the office will help process
patients requiring eye surgery, before they are sent to Venezuela for
free operations within the framework of the Cuba-Venezuela led Mission
Milagro, promoted under the ALBA initiative.
After being opened by Puno Governor Hernan Fuentes, the office Has been
subject to several verbal attacks, with both Belaunde and
Peruvian Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo claiming that the office
would favor foreign interference.
Meanwhile Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde said the ALBA
office in Puno is perfectly legit. He explained that an
investigation showed the office was managed by Peruvians who do not
respond to any international mechanism.
