Most militaries continue to look at warbots as support weapons that can conduct reconnaissance, selective strike, and logistical or other supporting tasks. Many military leaders are most comfortable with warbots in these limited roles because it is easier to keep humans in the loop and therefore retain a greater feeling of control. There is comparatively little discussion of incorporating warbots in significant, and in certain scenarios, primary combat roles into future combat doctrine. To do so, and to take advantage of the full capabilities of warbots, would require acceptance of a greater degree of autonomy, akin to the Army concept of Mission Command, than the US military seems to be comfortable with at this point. The U.S. military continues to invest in manned combat systems, yet warbots offer tremendous potential advantages as primary combatants. They are simply more capable, cheaper, and offer less risk to humans than manned equivalents in many, if not most, combat situations.
Another limitation of humans versus warbots is that the humans themselves are often the limiting performance factor. A pilot will black out at approximately nine Gs, but an appropriately designed airframe can handle much more.[vi] While robotic systems have unique vulnerabilities, to electro-magnetic pulses for example, humans are generally far more vulnerable than vehicles to a host of lethal and non-lethal factors. These include kinetic, nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, as well as the combat degrading effects of sleep deprivation, temperature extremes, and emotional factors such as anger, hatred, fear, and even the desire for self preservation. The use of warbots also has the potential to stretch the combat power of defense budgets. Humans are not expendable, and much of the weight and cost associated with modern aircraft, ships, and vehicles is due to the necessity of keeping them alive to operate the combat systems. But what if warbots were both effective and relatively expendable?
While warbots will never fully replace manned ships, vehicles and aircraft in all situations, they are too good to pass up as they offer increased effectiveness, reduced cost, and less risk to humans.
Four types of warbot appear, each being considered a different type of enemy in-game. The first are silver or brown and are initially encountered on Veldin, the second type are equipped with jetpacks and are found on Gaspar, the third are an upgraded red version on Kalebo III, and the final upgraded version are yellow and on the second visit to the Deplanetizer.
Warbots were commissioned by Chairman Drek in order to provide Victor an army to destroy the Galactic Rangers in the Hall of Heroes on Kerwan. Dr. Nefarious first created three-hundred of these warbots, though while showcasing the new troops, a defect, Clank, was churned out by the factory. Drek sent Victor to destroy Clank, though Victor was only capable of damaging Clank's escape shuttle, causing him to crash-land in the Kyzil Plateau, Veldin.[1] Warbots were then fought by Ratchet and Clank during "Return to the garage", attacking the garage while searching for Clank.
A red warbot force was then sent to Aleero City, Kerwan, to attack the Hall of Heroes. An overwhelming force was deployed by a Class G Dreadship to attack the Rangers. However, Ratchet and Clank used the warbots' Raritanium armor against them, using their ship's Mag Booster to propel the warbots against the Dreadship in "Take down the Warship".
Warbots were next fought in the Blarg Research Outpost on planet Gaspar, first defending the Blarg Depot during "Fight the Blarg", and later throughout the Telepathopus Fields during missions "Trade 20 brains for an infobot" and onwards. They were next fought by Ratchet and Cora Veralux attacking Fort Krontos on Batalia during "Travel to the Fort" and "Get to the Turret". When the Rangers attacked Skorg City on planet Quartu, warbots defended the factory in "Infiltrate the factory" and "Investigate the factory". Additionally, inactive warbots were seen on the assembly lines within the factory.
On board the Deplanetizer, more heavily armored warbots were fought during Ratchet's first visit in "Disable the Security System" and "Head to the Bridge". They were fought again during Drek Industries' invasion of the Gadgetron Headquarters on Kalebo III, in the mission "Find the Focus Lab", as Ratchet and Clank found a Hologuise used to sneak past them. Upon return to the Hologuise, Ratchet used it to fool the warbots while infiltrating in "Locate the Gravity Stabilizer", and fought many during the mission "Head to the Core".
Warbots proton-powered, rust proof, and laser-guided[1] humanoid robots with a glowing red eye, strong metallic jawlines, and a large jetpack on their back. They have a heavily armored upper torso with broad shoulders, while their legs and arms are relatively thin. As they sustain damage, their armor will drop off bit by bit, revealing that they have only a thin torso beneath. They carry a pistol as a weapon (sometimes a Combuster, and sometimes their own custom black laser blaster). Warbot armor has different colors depending on their appearance; warbots invading Kerwan and patrolling the Deplanetizer have red armor, while warbots fought elsewhere have purely metallic armor with a black trim.
In battle, warbots will either deploy their jetpack to fly while firing, or fire from the ground, depending on which they have chosen. They spread out their laser blasts to hit their opponent. Inside the Deplanetizer, when idle, some will go out and patrols looking for intruders, and when Captain Qwark waves at them, they will wave back and greet him.
Warbots attack with their ranged weapon, firing from the ground or from the air, and spreading out their lasers to attack Ratchet. These lasers should be dodged carefully as they do decent damage, and they are just slow enough to be predicted and dodged. Warbots are also very tough, heavily armored opponents. They are best defeated with the Warmonger or Plasma Striker, as those weapons will do sufficient damage while being able to fire in the air. The Buzz Blades are also effective against them, and the Fusion Grenade or Predator Launcher can be suitable substitutes. The Glove of Doom is also strong against those on the ground, and once upgraded to the Apocalypse Glove, is useful against all of them. In a large group, it is wise to destroy warbots first, as they are a large source of damage not easy to dodge, as well as being tough enemies that ammo should be prioritized against.
All in all, I'd say it's pretty good if you're facing classes that play or make a lot of 1 health minions, but you also have to think about what use you will get out of it... what kind of deck would you put warbot in that works better than existing ones? Control and patron don't really need it, and whirlwind effects kills all 1-health minions on the board anyway... Armorsmith does a similar job to warbot during early game in killing one-health minions, and is much more versatile as it can also be used as part of a whirlwind combo. Chow provides a more reliable 2-3 body for 1 mana if you're looking for early tempo.
A battle droid used by the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War, the Imperial warbot resembled a mobile turret, with treaded wheels, two clawed arms, and a rotating head equipped with blaster cannons. Several times taller than the average Human male, the warbots packed a significant punch, although Rebel troops did not believe them as fearsome as the All Terrain Armored Transports that pounded the Rebels on Hoth. Imperial warbots were far from invulnerable, and the skilled technician Kligson scorned what he saw as their shoddy craftsmanship, although they could be repaired rather simply using parts from similar machines.[1]
A creation of the Imperial war effort in the months after the Battle of Hoth, Imperial warbots were in use against Rebel forces as early as 3 ABY, playing an important role in the Battle of Xeron. The effect they had against Rebel ground troops on Xeron brought them to the attention of the Rebel brass, which made capturing an intact specimen a priority. A damaged warbot fell into the hands of Rebel Commander Luke Skywalker not long after, prompting Skywalker to seek out the famed reclusive technician Kligson, whom he hoped could examine the droid and provide a full schematic. Kligson, a cyborg who oversaw a community of droids on the "Droid World" Kligson's Moon, accepted the offer on the condition that he be allowed to repair and keep the machine.[1]
However, Kligson wasn't the only one with designs on the warbot. Although the cyborg had kept his moon officially out of the Galactic Civil War, his chief lieutenant, Zee-Exthree, secretly led a faction of Imperial-aligned droids that plotted to overthrow Kligson and deliver the "Droid World" to the Empire. Zee-Exthree also had come into possession of a damaged warbot, and hoped to use Skywalker's droid to repair their model and unleash it in their coup. However, they were outwitted and defeated by Kligson in the ensuing civil war, after the cyborg rebuilt Skywalker's droid and utterly destroyed Zee-Exthree's faction.[1]
designed with the sole purpose of exterminating all alien life on Orbona and helping humans regain control of the Earth. They were utilized by the human fleet during the Battle of Solas, where they fought against the city's pillar guards and eventually retreated. However, this retreat was at the behest of Loroc, who ordered the fleet to attack New Attica and the warbots to exterminate humanity.
Warbots are much taller than humans, and use three spider-like legs to move. They are deployed from warships in a spherical configuration, and deploy using hovthursters as they approach the ground. They are equipped with a range of weapons systems, including high-powered SHOCdarts. They are symmetrically designed such that both sides of their "head" mirror one another; that is, a warbot will always be facing fowards, making rear attack difficult.
