Oak Brook, Illinois, USA — Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) are pleased to announce Dr. Andrea Araújo Zin of Brazil as the winner of the annual Lions/PAAO
Award in Blindness Prevention.
Dr. Andrea Araújo Zin is a pediatric ophthalmologist with more than ten years of leadership experience in the field of childhood blindness prevention in Brazil and Latin America. Within Brazil, she is the medical director of the Instituto Catarata Infantil
in Rio de Janeiro where she has under her care up to 100 children with infantile cataract at a time. Dr. Araujo Zin has implemented training programs in the screening and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in neonatal units throughout the state
of Rio de Janeiro, and has trained as many as 1,000 neonatal nurses in ROP prevention. Additionally, she is coordinator of the World Health Organization Collaborative Center for the Prevention of Childhood Blindness at the Instituto Fernandes Figueira in Rio
de Janeiro, where she also maintains a position as assistant researcher to the neonatology department.
Internationally, Dr. Andrea Araújo Zin is a coordinator of the Childhood Blindness Subcommittee of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness in Latin America, and a consultant for childhood blindness of the Pan American Health Organization.
She has published 15 scientific articles and 9 book chapters, all related to childhood blindness. Dr. Araújo Zin will be presented the US$1,000 award during the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology’s Congress in Rio de Janeiro in August 2013.
The Lions/PAAO Award in Blindness Prevention was created to recognize excellence in the field of blindness prevention. The award will be presented on an annual basis to an ophthalmologist of the host country of the PAAO Regional Course or Congress to celebrate
local efforts in blindness prevention. The award is made possible through the LCIF SightFirst program and consists of a US$1,000 grant and a travel budget.

blindness around the world. I believe that Lions’ efforts, along with the hard work of ophthalmologists like Dr. Araújo Zin, are truly creating a positive change in the world of sight.”

Anunciado o Vencedor do Prêmio Lions/PAAO de Prevenção da Cegueira de 2013
Oak Brook, Illinois, EUA - A Fundação de Lions Clubs International (LCIF) e a Associação Pan Americana de Oftalmologia (PAAO) têm a satisfação de anunciar a Dra. Andrea Araújo Zin como a vencedora do Prêmio Anual Lions/PAAO de Prevenção da
Cegueira.
A Dra. Andrea é oftalmologista pediátrica com mais de dez anos de experiência em liderança no campo de prevenção da cegueira infantil no Brasil e América Latina. No Brasil, ela á a diretora médica do Instituto Catarata Infantil do Rio de
Janeiro, onde ela tem sob seus cuidados até 100 crianças com catarata infantil por vez. A Dra. Andrea implantou programas de treinamento em exames e tratamento de retinopatia prematura (ROP) em unidades neonatais pelo estado do Rio de Janeiro, e treinou 1.000
enfermeiros neonatais na prevenção da ROP. Além disto, ela é a coordenadora do Centro de Trabalho Conjunto da Organização Mundial da Saúde pela Prevenção da Cegueira Infantil do Instituto Fernandes Figueira no Rio de Janeiro, onde ela também desempenha as
funções de pesquisadora assistente no departamento de neonatologia.
Internacionalmente, a Dra. Andrea Araújo Zin é a coordenadora do Sub-Comitê da Cegueira Infantil da Agência Internacional para a Prevenção da Cegueira na América Latina e consultora para a cegueira infantil junto à Organização Pan-Americana
da Saúde. Ela já publicou 15 artigos científicos e nove capítulos de livros, todos relacionados à cegueira infantil. A Dra. Andrea Araújo Zin receberá o prêmio de US$ 1.000 durante o Congresso da Associação Pan Americana de Oftalmologia no Rio de Janeiro em
agosto de 2013.
O Prêmio Lions/PAAO de Prevenção da Cegueira foi criado para reconhecer excelência no campo da prevenção à cegueira. O prêmio será entregue anualmente ao oftalmologista do país sede do Congresso ou Curso Regional do PAAO para comemorar os
esforços locais pela prevenção da cegueira. O prêmio foi viabilizado através do programa SightFirst de LCIF, e inclui um subsídio de US$ 1.000 e um orçamento para viagem.
