MÉXICO: PLOS y UNAM inician convenio para publicación en Acceso Abierto en 2023

PLOS anuncia un acuerdo de publicación con la mayor institución de investigación de México
La
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)
y Public Library of Sciences (PLOS) anunciaron
hoy un acuerdo de un año, negociado a través de Accucoms
(representante regional de PLOS), que permitirá a
los investigadores de la UNAM publicar en PLOS ONE y revistas
seleccionadas de
PLOS dentro del acuerdo [1], sin incurrir en cargos
por procesamiento de artículos (APC). Los acuerdos de tarifa fija y otros modelos de PLOS, transfieren los costos de publicación de los autores
correspondientes a las
instituciones, en función del historial
de publicación en
revistas de PLOS en años anteriores y la proyección de crecimiento futuro de publicaciones. El convenio
con UNAM inicia el 1 de
enero de 2023.

América Latina”, dijo Sara Rouhi,
Directora de Alianzas Estratégicas de PLOS.

bien posicionada para demostrar los beneficios de la
publicación de acceso abierto y las prácticas de
investigación abierta”.
La Dra. Susana Lopez Charreton, investigadora de virología del Instituto de Biotecnología de la UNAM, comenta: “Este acuerdo es una gran noticia para los investigadores de la UNAM, ya que ayuda a llevar sus hallazgos a una audiencia más amplia en excelentes revistas de OA (Acceso Abierto). No es raro recurrir a publicar nuestro trabajo en otras revistas menos prestigiosas debido a los pagos de APC que muchas veces son demasiado altos para los presupuestos que tenemos. La oportunidad de publicar en la familia PLOS beneficiará enormemente nuestra investigación”.
El Dr. Alejandro Zentella-Dehesa, biólogo de células cancerosas e investigador principal del departamento de Medicina Genómica y Toxicología Ambiental del Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), dijo: “La incorporación de la UNAM a este convenio con PLOS ayudará mucho a comunicar los resultados generados en investigaciones originales como paso final de la actividad académica de los investigadores universitarios. La UNAM es una de las instituciones académicas más destacadas y productivas de América Latina con un activo y significativo número de publicaciones en todos los campos de la investigación científica y humanística. Sin embargo, la publicación de manuscritos de alta calidad en revistas internacionales con comités de revisión por pares exigentes con frecuencia se ve obstaculizada por una combinación de tarifas de publicación altas y limitaciones presupuestarias. Este convenio entre la UNAM y PLOS representa una valiosa oportunidad para que los investigadores de la UNAM publiquen resultados de alta calidad en revistas de este prestigioso grupo editorial, libres de limitaciones presupuestarias. Todo esto contribuirá a poner a disposición de la comunidad internacional el conocimiento generado en la UNAM”.
“Es emocionante ver y ser parte de los primeros desarrollos hacia los acuerdos de publicación de OA en América Latina, y trabajar de cerca con la UNAM como una institución pionera en la región en este aspecto. Estoy feliz de haber podido facilitar las conversaciones entre PLOS y la UNAM para llegar a este importante acuerdo sin precedentes, que sin duda servirá de ejemplo para muchas otras instituciones en México y América Latina en los próximos años”, comentó Anouk Snijders, Gerente Comercial Latinoamérica en Accucoms.
El modelo de tarifa fija (Flat Fee model) de PLOS, permite la publicación sin APC con revistas de PLOS dentro del acuerdo [1], lo que genera eficiencia y reduce los gastos generales administrativos para administrar los fondos de APC. La UNAM y PLOS también colaborarán en futuros datos, métricas y herramientas para que las instituciones evalúen los acuerdos de publicación de acceso abierto.
La UNAM se suma a una creciente lista de instituciones para firmar convenios con PLOS. Otros incluyen el Consorcio de Bibliotecas Académicas Suizas (CSAL), la Alianza Académica “Big Ten”, el sistema de la Universidad de California, Jisc (que incluye University College London, Imperial College London, University of Manchester), NorthEast Research Libraries (NERL) y el Centro de Research Libraries, la Canadian Research Knowledge Network, entre otros, para apoyar a sus investigadores a través de acuerdos de publicación con PLOS.
El año pasado, la Asociación de Sociedades Editoriales Profesionales (ALPSP) honró a PLOS como el co-ganador de Innovación en la publicación por su modelo de publicación de acción comunitaria (Community Action Publishing model).

PLOS announces publishing agreement with the
largest research institution in Mexico

San Francisco- The Universidad Nacional Autonoma Mexico (UNAM) and the Public Library of Science (PLOS) today announced a one-year agreement, brokered by Accucoms (PLOS’ regional representative),that will allow UNAM researchers to publish in PLOS ONE and other select PLOS journals[1] without incurring article processing charges (APC). Flat fee agreements and PLOS’ other models shift publishing costs from authors to research institutions based on prior publishing history and anticipated future growth with PLOS. The agreement with UNAM starts on January 1, 2023.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with UNAM, our first flat fee institution in Mexico, which furthers our global outreach that will continue on through Latin America,” said Sara Rouhi, Director of Strategic Partnerships for PLOS. “As the largest research institution in Mexico, UNAM is uniquely well-positioned to demonstrate the benefits of Open Access publishing and Open Research practices.”
Dr Susana Lopez Charreton, a
virology researcher from the Biotechnology Institute of the
UNAM, comments, “This agreement is great news for UNAM
researchers as it helps to bring their findings to a wider
audience in excellent OA journals. It is not uncommon to
resort to publishing our work in other, less prestigious
journals due to APC payments that are often too high for the
budgets we have. The opportunity to publish in the PLOS family
will greatly benefit our research.”
Dr. Alejandro Zentella-Dehesa,
a cancer cell biologist and principal investigator of the
department of Genomic Medicine and Environmental Toxicology of
the Institute for Biomedical Research of the Autonomous
National University of Mexico (UNAM), said “Incorporation of
UNAM to this agreement with PLOS will help a lot to
communicate the results generated in original research as the
final step of the academic activity of university researchers.
UNAM is one of the most prominent and productive academic
institutions in Latin America with an active and significant
number of publications in all fields of scientific and
humanistic research. However, publication of high-quality
manuscripts in international journals with demanding peer
review committees is frequently hampered by a combination of
high publication fees and budget limitations. This agreement
between UNAM and PLOS represents a valuable opportunity for
UNAM researchers to publish high quality results in journals
from this prestigious editorial group, free from budget
limitations. All this will contribute to make knowledge
generated at UNAM available to the international community.”

PLOS’ Flat Fee model enables
APC-free publishing with many of PLOS’ titles, which creates
efficiency and reduces administrative overhead for managing
gold APC funds. UNAM and PLOS will also collaborate on future
data, metrics, and tools for institutions to evaluate Open
Access publishing agreements.
UNAM joins a growing list of institutions to sign agreements with PLOS. Others include the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL), the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the University of California system, Jisc (including University College London, Imperial College London, University of Manchester), NorthEast Research Libraries (NERL) and the Center for Research Libraries, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network among others to support their researchers through publishing deals with PLOS.
The Association of Learned and
Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) last year honored PLOS
as the co-winner for Innovation in Publishing for its
Community Action Publishing model.
