Cairo Citadel towers over the eastern part of the city. On the left of the photo Mosque of Hassan, the picture is made from the minaret of Ibn Tulun Mosque.
In the Citadel, I got to the end of the day, before closing had less
than an hour, so a cursory examination turned out. Naturally, I went to
the Mosque of Mohammed Ali, but most paid attention to earlier al-Nasir
mosque. In fact that's all I could see the Citadel.

Construction
of the fortress began in 1176, Salah al-Din, and lasted until the 19 th
century. Every ruler of Egypt contributes, not forgetting to dub it had
been built before. I must say that, and Saladin began the construction
does not just happen, some sources indicate that the site of the present
Citadel was the so-called "air palace" built by Ibn Tulun still, that
brought the famous Mosque and many other buildings in the city.

With
the era of Saladin, too little has been preserved - only the walls and a
pair of bastions. He built a mosque, madrasa, and a huge
hospital-maristan disappeared. At the moment, the oldest building in the
Citadel - Mosque of al-Nasir (1318). It is built in classic Arabic
style in the form of an open courtyard, for a long time, its minaret was
the highest point in town, not counting the Fatimid Al-Dzhuyushi Mount
Mukkatam.
When viewed from the rear wall of building, I found not a locked door
to the roof, it was a big omission Egyptian companions, because one
moment and I was equipped with a photo-position at the top of the
minaret of An-Nasiriyah. But he had to hurry, my maneuver was seen Cairo
youth sticks inside the Citadel. Pernicious example inspired them to
feats and within minutes dozens of Egyptian adolescents hovered on the
roof of the mosque. And it was a lot of girls - all with hijabs on their
heads from outside it looked very touching and somewhat naive. The kids
were in 17-18 years, but they leaped, as if they had been for 10 years,
Egyptians are always very directly.
Naturally, I knew that we will soon notice - Citadel sufficiently
"sensitive" subject and the outcome was not long to wait, the police
came and removed all participants from the roof. I was released
immediately, and adolescents has long worked on the.
The
most famous object in the fortress - the mosque of Muhammad Ali. It is
visible everywhere, this is not "Egyptian" building in the city has
become its symbol, along with the pyramids at Giza. The mosque was built
in 19 century in the typical Ottoman style, which in turn continued the
tradition of Byzantine architecture, endlessly replicating the image of
Sophia in Constantinople.
The painting by David Roberts, writing his scene in 1838, even before
the construction of mosques, the Citadel does not seem as impressive
now.
More
than anything in the artist's watercolors are evident rampart of Cairo,
and some mountain in the foreground with a spectacular facility on the
top. I was curious what it might be, and found in its archives related
photos.
Apparently
this is the mausoleum of Yunus al-Davadar, only now the top, on which
it stands, has become more shallow - whether cultural stratum naros for
200 years, whether the artist a bit glossed over the reality.
After
the construction of a mosque Cairo Citadel began to look more
impressive, it is a pity destroyed during the construction of ancient
buildings. Of course, I have dedicated the fortress is very little time,
it made sense to explore the walls and towers, this is true it would
take a lot of chutzpah and luck, once again, the Egyptians to the
Citadel are very kind - at the entrance I was searched twice and even
watched a passport.
The walls of the Citadel.
The other day I looked inside the west gate. Under the arches of the
tower lived many local homeless people, and there was a terrible stench.
Despite the fact that the gate was restored, they have produced dismal.
