I'd like to my Windows C++ program to be able to read the number of hard page faults it has caused. The program isn't running as administrator. Edited to add: To be clear, I'm not as interested in the aggregate page fault count of the whole system.

A page fault occurs when a sought-out page table entry is invalid. If the requested page needs to be brought in from disk, it is called a hard page fault (a very expensive operation), and all other types are considered soft page faults (a less expensive operation). A Page Fault event payload contains the virtual memory address for which a page fault happened and the instruction pointer that caused it. A hard page fault requires disk access to occur, which could be the first access to contents in a file or accesses to memory blocks that were paged out. Enabling Page Fault events causes a hard page fault to be logged as a page fault with a type Hard Page Fault. However, a hard fault typically has a considerably larger impact on performance, so a separate event is available just for a hard fault that can be enabled independently. A Hard Fault event payload has more data, such as file key, offset and thread ID, compared with a Page Fault event.

Process : Page Faults/sec. This is an indication of the number of page faults that occurred due to requests from this particular process. Excessive page faults from a particular process are an indication usually of bad coding practices. Either the functions and DLLs are not organized correctly, or the data set that the application is using is being called in a less than efficient manner.

I have a Windows 7 64-bit computer that is having performance issues. After some investigation, I have discovered that the page faults / second on it - as reported by Performance Monitor - are really high.

This counter gives a general idea of how many times information being requested is not where the application (and VMM) expects it to be. The information must either be retrieved from another location in memory or from the pagefile. Recall that while a sustained value may indicate trouble here, you should be more concerned with hard page faults that represent actual reads or writes to the disk. Remember that the disk access is much slower than RAM.

A hard page fault is when the memory manager finds that the block of memory its needs is not in RAM. That memory has been swapped out to disk, and your system slows down because it takes more time to get it from there. Add more memory to your system to reduce the number of page faults and improve performance.

The "Page Faults/second" includes both soft faults (pages that can be served from/to RAM) and hard faults (pages that must be served from/to the disk). So having a high "Page Faults/second" value doesn't necessarily mean a problem. Examples of soft page faults include turning pages in the transition list (it consists of the standby list and the modified list; they contain temporarily unused memory pages, which are candidates for paging out to the disk (or discarded if they are not modified), but are still in the RAM) into active pages and turning active pages into the transition list. In Windows 10, this could also happen when compressed pages are turned into active pages (as Windows 10 has memory compression).

Alozzy - I have tried your suggested solution, but unfortunately it did not work for me. I was hopeful it would, as this is the first suggestion I have seen online that addresses the idea of essentially disabling the default display by closing the lid of the Surface Book. Unfortunatley, the behavior of the remote desktop is still the same... it always spans all three monitors as soon as I enable the Surface Book display.

When attempting to access the Printer Properties located on the PS, error message boxes are shown with the following: "Function address 0x1436fc61 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xc0000005) Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed." Upon selecting the only option listed: "OK", another message box appears: "The 'Kyocera 5052ci KX' printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?" Options listed are "Yes" and "No". Selecting "No" closes the dialog box and brings up the properties page for the printer. Selecting "Yes" starts the Add Printer Driver Wizard and progresses normally until you select "Finish", where the process hangs for a few seconds, and then the "Function address caused a protection fault" error that was previously described appears. No change to any behavior after trying to use a new driver. Both using the drivers provided on Windows update and using drivers freshly downloaded from Kyocera's website produce the same result. I attempted to install one of the printers through IP, and when selecting drivers the option to use the current driver is greyed out, "No compatible drivers found." When reaching the end of the installation wizard, these messages show: "Status: Driver installation succeeded. Installing printer..." and immediately after this status shows, another error message box appears saying: "Unable to install printer. Cannot complete this function." Once you select "OK" on that window, the "Installing printer..." status message changes to "Printer installation failed." with options to either go Back or Cancel.

Thanks for the advice. I had rebooted multiple times. Virus check was switched off (another consequence of the Windows update perhaps). I uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox and it defaulted to the correct folder C:\Users\Chris.000\Dropbox.

Here is the error message. I keep my downloaded DropBox files on an external drive. I also disconvered that somehow in the windows update I show in the User files with two of me - one is a new user but has my name on it Deanne - the old one is renamed at Deanne.000

If you are not allowed to clear your username (XRDP always showing a name by default), clear the RDP connection history for the server you are trying to connect, or take this as an opportunity to clear all connection history, this way (Windows side - CMD):

My monitoring server is a linux machine (checkmk installed). I cleared the logs on the monitored windows server 2019 (checkmk agent installed) and I still see the the logs in the GUI on the linux machine. I rebooted both machines and still have the problem =(

i have the same problem, seems like while it is trying to install again and again in device manager i force update and search automatically it installs the driver. But still a problem 20h2 windows 5 pcs install same problem and all pcs are having a memory and hdd hog. the cpu and the memory are used 100% . let me say i have been using logmein on my networks for a long time. wanted to try this. Looks like nothing is stable to be used in production environment.

Indeed, the actual Acrobat Pro 2020 installer faultily sets the printer port to "COM1" instead of "Documents\*.pdf". So you have to access the Windows Print Management console to manually add the correct port via "Ports -> Add Port -> New Port Type" and select the "AdobePDF.inf" file from the driver. This would be unpardonable alone, but there's more: it seems "AdobePDF.inf" file from the original Acrobat Pro 2020 installer doesn't work! We had to unpack the files from our old Acrobat Pro 2017 installer and use that *.INF file for the path to have the port work.

I just encountered this problem, and the port change fixed it. I hadn't created a pdf in a few weeks, but my default printer had been reset to another printer on my system. This had to have been caused by a Windows 10 patch.

Indeed, on Windows 10 and older, the Acrobat Pro 2020 installer faultily sets the printer port to "COM1" instead of "Documents\*.pdf". So you have to access the Windows Print Management console to manually add the correct port via "Ports -> Add Port -> New Port Type" and select the "AdobePDF.inf" file from the driver.

The problem is that the "or higher" refers to higher versions of DirectX 8/9, not higher versions of DirectX beyond 9. The game can't actually use the DirectX 10/11/12 that is installed on windows machines by default nowadays.

The system administrator might need to contact the certificate authority who sold the faulty certificate and inform them that the certificate is in violation of RFC 3280. Also ask the certificate authority to issue a new certificate that contains the following key usage value in addition to any other required values:
Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1)

You can review setup*.log and compatdata*.xml logs at C:\$WINDOWS.BT\Sources\Panther\. The compatiblity information is included in compatdata*.xml. Review all of these files for more information. If it is a driver it will just list the driver file such as OEM*.inf. You can open this file at c:\windows\inf to determine the exact driver causing the issue. You will need to upgrade any drivers and/or upgrade/uninstall any incompatible apps. If you have a managed workstation please report any compatibility issues to CCIT Imaging and PC Management.

Drives such as your home drive (H:) are mapped whenever you log into any windows computer on campus. When you log into an application on Virtual Desktop, these drives are mapped as well so they will show up twice - once for the login to the Virtual Desktop server and once when logged into your client computer (remapped to the session). Opening the remapped drives in SAS will cause issues but opening the drives that were mapped when you logged into the Virtual Desktop session will open fine.
