The Sweet Spot in the Middle! We invite you to experience our wonderful location between Steinwehr and Baltimore Streets. The Inn at Cemetery Hill is the best location in Gettysburg for sightseeing, shopping, dining, and recreation. We are adjacent to the Gettysburg National Cemetery and just a few minutes away from Gettysburg National Military Park, Museum and Visitor Center.

We have been coming to Gettysburg for 9 years now. When we started staying IN Gettysburg we chose this hotel which was originally a Travelodge. The location is perfect. Walking distance to restaurants, shops, the National Soldier's cemetery, even the square is only about a 10 minute walk. This was our first trip without our father who we lost in 2017. And we had mentioned that briefly in conversation when booking the rooms, and when we arrived, the staff had left a beautiful little vase of flowers in my mothers room. We thought that was incredibly thoughtful of them. The rooms are clean, the beds are comfy. The patio rooms (at the back of the hotel on Steinwehr Ave are the best! Nice to just sit on the porch with a drink in hand in the evenings and watch the people go by) The complimentary breakfast is good. Lots of variety (cereal, English muffins, french toast, waffles, eggs, yogurt, fruit) and on the weekends they have sausage, biscuits and gravy. I don't mind the coffee but if you are picky, there is a nice coffee shop not even 5 minutes of a walk away. I could go on and on about this wonderful hotel. It has played a major part in our trips to Gettysburg. Thanks again to the wonderful staff for another amazing stay.

Cute hotel. Great location. Restaurants within walking distance. It was nice they had a continental breakfast which means I didn't have to take time to order at a restaurant and I could get to my site seeing quicker.

You are already familiar with our high standards of cleanliness and care. We are happy to reopen our FULL continental breakfast. Please be aware, effective May 13, 2022, we have implemented a few changes. Our nightly pet fee is now $25 for one pet and $30 for two/three pets, plus tax. Our Loyalty Reward members will continue to have a flat nightly pet fee of $20, plus tax, and are exempt from check-in/-out fees (pending availability). Lastly, stayovers will not receive housekeeping service unless they request it and it will be available between 10 AM and 1:45 PM.

I wrestled with Boneface to have her pour milk into a bowl of cereal, it spilling in every direction. Worst of all was trying to scoop up the cereal with a flimsy spoon in the time that was left. Fruity loops gained flight across the cemetery disturbing the other ghouls resting before their spooking shifts.

It all came to a crashing end. Boneface muddied the controls and I was unable to stop her as she grabbed the wooden table and flipped it with all her bony might. Then she looked at me square in the face, drunk with rebellion, a fruit loop stuck to her gaunt jaw, and said:

According to "The Asylum Cemetery, 1883-1913," there were 1539 burials there, and it took Charles Claggett, working for W. T. Rigdon (who later built the IKE Box building!), a full year to exhume the bodies. But it should not surprise us if not all 1539 were in fact exhumed and cremated or reburied elsewhere. Equally, it should not surprise us if 1539 is not actually the exact count and there were burials whose records were missing or incomplete and not in that 1539 tally. Significantly, the booklet does not have a map of the cemetery. It's all like "here is the approximate location."

There are a lot of "known unknowns" here.

Salem Reporter wrote about delays on the Yaquina Hall project -

Sounds like DAS is going to sell it to the city for "free" and will throw in some additional money for the delay and cost escalation.

Over at Salem History Matters, they posted about the research and subsequent report to DAS on the cemetery. There wasn't much very conclusive. One interesting thing is that the cemetery appears to have been west of 23rd, more in the area of the old Maternity Ward for General Hospital, rather than between 23rd and 25th, near Yaquina Hall or north of it. So when Hospital sells that parcel the question may be active again. But it seems unlikely that on the lots east of 23rd, the former State Hospital property, there is any lingering problem with remains.

The research also did not turn up any conclusive evidence on the missing 1539. So that's still a big mystery.

It did turn up evidence that Claggett was not employed by Rigdon before 1929, so that detail is in question now.

Not a lot of answers, but it did further develop the evidence.

I do believe there are bodies at Walker Park
Between the State hospital and prison
I also think bodies will be found under property known as Murphy Manor on 24TH St NE which borders Walker Park to the West
Please how can this be checked? Ty

The annual spring breakfast for Greenwood Cemetery will be held on Saturday, April 29 at the Clarksville American Legion. Biscuits & gravy, grilled sausage, eggs, pancakes and drinks will be served from 7-9:30 a.m., for $8.

Each year we like to honor our veterans who are buried at Greenwood and share some of their stories with the community. A well-known family who lived in the Clarksville area since the 1800s raised a family of children who served our nation proudly and this is a chapter from their family story.

Edward Hall Bryant was born Feb. 19, 1890 on the family farm owned by his parents, Ben W. & Florence (Beauchamp) Bryant. Edward married Genia Price Witten on May 20, 1914. She was the daughter of Simeon and Buannah Dudley Witten of Cyrene. To this union were born 12 children and all 12 children and three of the grandchildren were born in the same home Ed was born in on a farm south of Clarksville on the hill locally known as Kissinger Hill.

One of the 12 children, Edward H. Bryant, age 94, and living with his wife Gertrude Kahler in Colorado Springs, Colo., retired as a Lt. Colonel from the Air Force, serving over 29 years as a pilot. He flew 13 missions over Berlin and also flew in Vietnam.

Florence Bryant, who married Devoid Mitchell, raised their family and farmed in the Ramsey Creek area. Florence, Devoid, one son, Sidney Mett, and one granddaughter Mary C. Mitchell, are buried at Greenwood.

Jack Dudley Bryant enlisted in the USAF during WW II as an aircraft mechanic. He spent time in South Africa, Sicily, Italy and Turkey. He was married to Beth Jones and retired to Reno NV after serving 25 years in the military.

Mett Beauchamp Bryant served with the Army in WW II for 4 years mostly in Germany. He came back and did what he loved and farmed the Bryant acreage. He was married to Betty Jo Creamer and she survives.

Julia Lorena Bryant married Alex Oblein who served in the Air Force and retired after 26 years as a Master Sergeant. After their retirement they returned to the Clarksville area and are buried in the Bryant family plot.

The Bryant family was a large happy family. They all had their job to do and did so willingly for the good of all. Many grandchildren still live in the area and one is Naomi Mitchell Lewellen who serves on the Board of the Greenwood Cemetery.

Located on the first floor with patio access just a few feet away with outdoor dining available for breakfast, this room features pillow-top queen size bed decorated in blues, brown and tan with sitting area and table.
