I didn't end up surfing the other night, but I spent some time checking out the wave and am excited for tonight! I will be there around 6:30, maybe a tad earlier.  Hope to see a bunch of us out there! 

Somewhat related question:  Someone on the main boater email list posted about running the Grandjean on Saturday.  Anyone here know if it's friendly at 3500 cfs? If so, does anyone want to go?

Hey Stacey and Kim , I will be there around 6. Biked by it yesterday and there were around seven boaters out playing in two of the features. 

I will ask around about GJ , I know a few who have done it at lower levels but not 3500.

It depends on the wood situation, but assuming there isn't any, it is pretty friendly at those flows. There is a nasty recirculating hole on the right wall in I think it's called Wake up. I toured in there out of my boat for a few sessions before having to actively swim my way back out. If you know it's there you can avoid it. If you stay in the wave train pointed left you probably won't even see it. It's a few miles above Kirkham.

So they dropped the river 500 CFS, and rearranged the wave for surfers. It wasn't nearly as fun as it was last week. The eddys were a bit challenging as well. But the water felt good.

I am a little sad.

river because of the high flow?

Karin, the answer depends on what your question actually is.

The county is who actually "opens" the river to floating (tubes, etc), but there is no one, as far as I know, who actually has legal authority over people paddling (kayaking) the Boise (say, from Lucky Peak or Barber Park through Eagle). Boise Fire will make a concerted effort to do some clean up of strainers, etc, once it gets below a certain level (still well below what it is now, as there would be certain danger for people casually floating the entirety of the river right now), and then technically the county "opens" the river. If you ever want to get a firefighter off on a tangent, ask one of them how they feel about this set up. 

Sarah M could likely chime in on the actual potential legal consequences, but I'm pretty sure waterways get sticky, so the idea of open vs closed is really just in a hope to keep people safe. This is not entirely unlike the put in of the canyon being "closed" but not actually being able to tell people they cannot paddle the canyon b/c there's a log. 

None of this pertains to people using the whitewater park.
