New to Ubuntu and was disappointed to realize Sonos does not support linux. I loaded 'the unofficial sonos controller' ( -sonos-controller-for-linux) which allows me to connect to sonos speakers but only appears capable of playing from music services (spotify, etc). Does anyone know of a way to modify the unofficial controller to include playing movies, etc... or a different player or code that directs computer to sonos via bluetooth?

To download a movie to your computer you will need the software on which to run the movie [source: DIVX]. However, using such software in the distribution of movies that are copyrighted without the permission of the author is illegal in the United States, as well as elsewhere in the world [source:CNET]. If you want to download free movies you should ensure that you only download from a site that is offering the movies legally. There is no connection between payment and legality. Just because you are paying for a movie does not mean it is legal, and being free does not always indicate piracy [source Educause]. Free movies can be watched online from your computer by going to a reputable site, such as the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). This offers users in the United States the opportunity to watch free movies, as well as episodes of TV series, without any payment [source: BBC].

I'm not on a new computer or anything. I update my computer when it tells me to. I bought these TV shows in iTunes on this same computer. I've played these TV shows on this same computer for the past year. Why is my computer all of a sudden not playing my TV show and popping up with that message listed in the question?

I saw 4 reports of HDCP errors "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)" when playing back purchased iTunes HD videos/movies after updating to iTunes 11.3.1. They were OK/able to playback iTunes HD content before the update they said, so assuming their display(s) were HDCP compatible. Most noted trying the usual 'zap the pram', reset smc, etc. (Re-detecting displays, disconnecting/reconnecting, verifying cables are OK/swapping cables are other common tips. And remember everything in the chain from source to the display has to be HDCP compliant, including any adapters or switches.)

In some cases nothing may help, and remember that older displays may not be HDCP compatible, including some older Apple Cinema Displays. (I saw some posts that seemed to think that if the display supported HD resolutions, it was also HDCP compliant - but that's not a given. Many older displays have native 1080P or higher resolution but do not support HDCP - aka High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection.)

(I previously listed Apple's support article on Apple TV and HDCP, but as of fall 2015 routes to "Get help with audio, video, or power on Apple TV" which finally had a section on "HDCP" added as of Jan 22, 2016.)

I watch a lot of movies streaming online. Should I keep my computer on the power cord, or should I charge the unit completely, remove the power cord, then wait till it gets to a low battery and plug it in again?

To get the most out of your MacBook's battery, follow the Notebook Battery advice from Apple: unplug and use your battery until empty about once a month, then charge back up to full. Your question expands a bit on another question on the site about general charging:

In your case, streaming video is usually a high power usage event that can drain a battery in 4 or 5 hours. You will therefore be more likely to have a higher recharge cycle count than someone that isn't using as much power. For that reason, I would try to keep it plugged in when running. Everything is a balance, and it would be hard to reach the 1000 recharge cycles design lifetime of the new batteries in Apple portables - but as long as you are once a month draining it down, you might be better off keeping it on power the rest of the time it runs just in case you reach that limit before you are done with using the Mac.

Well, Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time, as for a lithium-based battery, it's important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. MacBook / Pro, though, are designed to deliver up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles before it reaches 80% of its original capacity.

Since 2009-2010 laptops carry a technology called Adaptive Charging which basically is a chip within the battery that talks to its cells monitoring everything from charge level to temperature. The chip relays this information to the computer, which uses an advanced algorithm to determine the optimal charging current. Adaptive Charging reduces the wear and tear on the battery giving it a lifespan of up to 5 years.

The best laptop for streaming and watching movies for you will depend to some extent on what else you want to use it for. After all, few people use a laptop only for watching films. This is why we've also evaluate the devices above for other day-to-day functions like web surfing, social media, productivity tasks and more intensive design work.

Budget will obviously play a role in your decision, but so will portability. Watching movies can be more enjoyable on a larger screen, and so larger laptops like the MacBook Pro 16 and Dell XPS 17 feature in high positions in our list above. But, while these are great if you're going to be using them at home or in an office most of the time, they may not be the best choice for you if you regularly travel with your laptop or use it in different locations on the go. In that case, you may prefer a small, lighter laptop for streaming, like the 13-inch MacBook Air.

In general, we'd recommend buying laptops with at least Full HD (1920x1080), for crisp and clear visuals while watching movies. You can go higher, of course, as there are many 2K and 4K laptops on the market.

However, before you commit to that extra spend, make sure you have a service that can stream to that picture quality. (For example, Netflix has a 4K option in most countries, but it demands a higher level of subscription.) Also make sure your internet connection is fast enough to handle high-quality streaming.

Although it's unlikely that anyone would buy a new laptop for only watching movies, streaming 4K films and TV series is a very important part of the modern laptop experience. That's why I've put together some of our top-reviewed laptops that shine when it comes to displaying films beautifully (as well as being able to handle a lot of other creative tasks).

There are, of course, different variables to consider. Some of you will prefer a Windows laptop. Others, an Apple lappy. Perhaps you just want an inexpensive Chromebook that will play your films perfectly, or maybe you'll also want your new laptop to be one of the best laptops for writers too? Well, we've got the lot covered below.

This impressive Windows laptop boasts a stunning OLED screen and quality Harman Kardon for an outstanding audiovisual combo. And it has the power and features to make a great device for creatives too.

We rate the 2021 MacBook Pro 16 as the best Apple option since it has a larger 16-inch screen. Apple has a newer 2023 model, but we think it makes more sense to look for a deal on this one if you don't need the latest specs.

We've already recommended two 16-inch laptops, but if you want an even larger screen for a more immersive experience, the Dell XPS 17 is gorgeous. The picture is outstanding thanks to 4K resolution, HDR support and 500 nits brightness.
