Wonderful Post Murthy ji…Thanks a lot…

Thank you Shahul ji for the medicinal uses…

Warm welcome Brijesh ji to the Bodhi-groups… Very useful information, Thanks for mentioning the native of this plant, which made me remember a few things I have learnt about equating Lajjalu to that of Mimosa pudica.

Some Scholars are of the opinion that this plant of Mimosa pudica can never be the Lajjalu of Ayurveda, as because it is not an Indigenous plant of our Country. I do remember Mathew Dan ji expressing the same view in one of his Lectures, when he visited our College, early last year.

I would like to have an open discussion on this point of Lajjalu being Mimosa pudica. Somebody please do clarify. . .

Adding a few more points. . .

THE SENSITIVE PLANT

Mimosa pudica is well known for its rapid plant movement. In the evening the leaflets will fold together and the whole leaf droops downward. It then re-opens at sunrise. This type of motion has been termed nyctinastic movement. The leaves also close up under various other stimuli, such as touching, warming, or shaking. The stimulus can also be transmitted to neighbouring leaves. These types of movements have been termed seismonastic movements. The cause is a loss of turgor pressure. The movement is caused by “a rapid loss of pressure in strategically situated cells that cause the leaves to droop right before one’s eyes”.

IN WITCHCRAFT & BLACK MAGIC

In India & in various other countries, Mimosa pudica is a very commonly used plant for the same purpose. Years before, I had visited BAIF, Tiptur(Karnataka), which excels in protection & Documentation of Folk medicine. Where in I found renowned Ethno-botanists who had revealed that Mimosa pudica was very well used in Black magic in many parts of the country.

Also they said that on a particular Day (The New moon Day) with a particular (Nakshatra) Star, the black magicians perform poojas in Graveyards with this plant, after which they make a paste of this plant along with many other drugs and tie it in the lower abdomen, which would make the people around to get attracted towards him & become Slaves like !!! It was a fascination to me to hear about such magical uses. Also after such rituals the powder of this plant is filled in a small cylindrical metal tube along with some Copper sheets inscribed with some Mantras & worn in Arms or Neck, as to protect themselves from Evil spirits or powers.!!!

Such a practice is observed across the globe. In various other countries, Mimosa pudica is counted as one of the magical herbs, which is used In Witchcraft for everything concerning love, protection and prophetic dreams.
