Hello--

as a clinician in the US I struggle daily with accessing dravyas to practice with. One that I can get, but don't know what to do with, is Kalongi, or kalajeera, in seed and taila form.

I need as much info as I can get: gunas, karmas, phala shruti, adhikar, textual references that I can refer to etc. I would also love to get unani uses and references.

Especially interested in krumighna karma; can i use it for matra basti? topically?

Also it seems there is confusion over what plant this is. I read online: “Black cumin or black zeera” is “Bunium Persicum” while “Black seed or Kalonji” is “Nigella Sativa”.
and  that the original kalajeera is not what we know today as kalajeera (nigella). What impact does this confusion have on our understanding of the available dravya?

Thanks so much for this group-- I use it often!

Hello Dear Mr. Edien and others who wish to know.

Kaduva jeera, Vana jeera, Somraj, Kali jiri, Kaduvo jiri,  these names are applied to Vernonia anthelmintica. The seed is little elongatedand, ribbed and hairy. As the name is indicative it is used for antihelmenthic properties to evade worms etc.

NIGELLA SATIVA Seeds

Kalongi, Krishna jiraka, Kala jira, Black cumin names are for Nigella sativa. It is Galactagogue and a tonic. The seeds are dark black in color and smaller in size.

Sincerely,

Dr. Venugopal
