Dear members...
posting Ipomoea marginata (I.sepiaria, Convolvulus marginatus), Convolvulaceae - LAKSHMANA in Ayurveda

Photograph taken from: Virudhachalam, Cuddallore District, Tamil Nadu

Habit:  A Slender Twiner with a slightly thickened tuberous perennial root.

The term Lakshmana means the one having lucky signs or marks.
This plant is described as having leaves with blood like reddish marks on them
(Synonyms: Raktaalpabindubhilaanchitachada, Asrabinduchada, Raktabindusamam patram, Kalankaparni)

Synonyms like Putraada, Putrajanani - indicates the property of the drug to bestow a male child.

Also, The plant is described in Ayurveda as tuberous (Sukanda), creeper with a hairy stem (Romavallisamanvitam) and also flowers which are as white as cow's milk (Gokshirasadrusham pushpam).

Though many plants are considered to be the source of Lakshmana across the country, another species of the same genera with almost the same features is also taken as Lakshmana. which is I. obscura

It is one of the drugs in the group of Dashapushpa (Group of ten flowers)

Medicinal Uses: Promotes body strength, corrects vitiation of Pitta, very well reputed drug to cure sterility in women & instilled as drops in the nose to women who seek a male child.

Root is an important ingredient in "Maanasamitra vatakam".

Sanskrit: Lakshmana
Hindi: Bankalmi
Thamizh: Thali kodi
Malayalam: Thiruthali, Chutti thiruthali, Kolambi (Sorry Dinesh ji i could not provide them in the native script as there is some problem in my PC)

Dear Guru ji...Am sure it is not I. aquatica...the red blotches on the leaves are not seen in I.aquatica.

Dear Shahul ji...
I understand your query on the difference in appearance of I.marginata in Kerala..this plant has lots of variations in the leaf in the wild...Most of the times we come across a leaf in I.marginata with a broad ovate leaf with a cordate base. But at times there is also a variation in its form with the a lobed nature(as seen in my Post).
I would like to substantiate my stand with these 2 links

and i hope this is what makes the confusion...Refer the below link.. You can clarify that it has both type of leaves...a few with a lobed nature & also with a Broad ovate leaf with a cordate base

Also you may get the reference in Indira Balachandran's text, with the hand drawn illustration, which also supports this.

Looking forward to your photographs too...for further corrections.

Thanks a Lot

Hari ji
I had seen these on the net before writing my mail. The deciding factor would be the side view of flower. The corolla tube is salver shaped in I. marginata, funnel shaped in I. aquatica. I found my I. aquatica climbing on fence with no water near by. Here it is

Thank You Guruji...the plant in your link is truely I.aquatica..itself...and doesnot have those reddish blotches....on the leaves & flower is also very different than that of mine. Though i could nt get a side view's photo, but i assure that it was salver shaped in the plant that i had posted here...

Your link confirms that my post is not I.aquatica...Lets wait for Shahul ji's photos for further clarifications
