According to the Classics, Sahachara is a Gregarious shrub (Syn: Sahacharah, Sahaacharah), possesses spiny structures (Syn: Kurantakah, Rujakarah), and occurs in exposed habitats like deserts, Naked hill tops, Sea Coast (Syn: Saireyah, Saireyaka).
VARIETIES
Bhava Prakasha Nighantu mentions 4 varieties having, Red, Yellow, Blue and White flowers. Most of which have been equated with different species of the Genera Barleria.
Red & White flowered – Barleria cristata
Yellow flowered – Barleria prionitis
Blue flowered – Barleria strigosa
However the Classical Ayurvedic texts mentioned Saireyaka Yugma (2 varieties of Saireyaka), which we come across in Varunadi Gana of Vagbhatta. (Yugma means ‘pair’)
Kerala Physicians understand these two varieties to be as the Dark one (Karim kurunji) and the White one (Ven kurunji). Out of the two varieties the most commonly used variety is Karim Kurunji. (However as per the physicians both the varieties have the same Therapeutic value)
CONTROVERSY OF THE DRUG
Karim Kurunji (Dark variety)
Rheede’s Hortus malabaricus reveals that Ecbolium viride of Acanthaceae had been the accepted source of the drug in Kerala in those days.
But in current practice, Nilgirianthus ciliatus is mainly used as Sahachara in Kerala.
MARKET SAMPLES OF SAHACHARA IN KERALA reveals that Nilgirianthus heyneanus also comes out in the name of Sahachara.
The synonyms which supports the view of Niligirianthus sp. Being used as sahachara . . .
Sahachara – Plants that are found in groups giving bushy appearance and covering a large area
Mrudu Kantaka - that which possesses soft spines
Baana – Causing mild pain on touch
Mrudu Kaanda – Soft stem.
Ven kurunji – White variety
The botanical identity of Sweta Sahachara (Ven Kurunji) is also disputed
Indian Materia Medica and Chopra equate this white variety as Barleria courtallica.
Rheede’s Hortus malabaricus mentions Justicia betonica as the White variety.
In North Malabar region, another plant named Calacanthus grandiflorus (Vaazha Kurunji in Malayalam) is used as Sahachara.
To conclude
In South India, the sources are
Black variety (Karim kurunji) - As per Rheede’s Hortus malabaricus - Ecbolium viride (Old source)
Nilgirianthus ciliatus (New source), (Market samples – Nilgirianthus heyneanus)

As per Indian Materia Medica & Chopra - Barleria courtallica &
North Malabar Physicians - Calacanthus grandiflorus.
In Northern parts of India, the sources are
Anyways there is no such confusions, as all the four varieties are considered to be different species of Barleria.
