Dear Suhas,
I have heard that Sarjam is a term that is used as a synonym for Shala identified commonly as Shorea robusta (Ref. Ayurvedic pharmacoepial plant drugs: Expanded Therapeutics by C P Khare pp-569-570). Shorea resin is well known to have a clear white appearance. I have never seen a white resin from Vateria though! I hope more experienced colleagues can help with your query.

Thank you Dr Madhu for sharing your thoughts. Whether chanchalyam is the malayalam name of shorea robusta or vateria indica?

Dear Suhas ji,
MOST of the resins usually have a transparent nature when they are afresh. Over a period of time, due to oxidation the transparency will be slowly lost.
Out of interest, had tried capturing the entire life cycle of Vateria indica, way back in 2007.
Presenting you a few Pictures of Vateria indica that were shot.
In my observation,
Fresh resin - Bluish green (the first pic in attachment)
slowly becomes opaque pale yellowish
Older resin - Brownish to reddish Yellow. (Refer pictures attached)

But in the regions around Koppa & Agumbe, Karnataka there are innumerable members of Dipterocarpaceae where resins may appear in different colors. Hence we should be careful with the identification.
Few species like Hopea ponga Dennst. Mabb.( transparent to Creamish white resin), Canarium strictum Roxb. (Blackish brown resin) grown in this belt have resins which shall not be confused for Sarja (Vateria indica) resin.

Regards
