Dear Murthy ji…

Thanks for the post…& a nice photo… Thank you Brijesh ji for the wonderful information

Dugdhika ( दुग्धिका ), Ksheeraa (  क्षीर ), Viksheerini ( विक्षीरिनी), are the different names used for this plant in Ayurveda… Which indicates the presence of Milky Latex in it.

Different sources of DUGDHIKA:

1.      E. thymifolia (Most accepted source, also acc. To Ayurvedic formulary of India),

2.      E.microphylla, E. hypericifolia (both are sources of Laghu Dugdhika as per Bapalal Vaidya)

3.      E. hirta (widely used source in many parts of the country)

English: Asthma weed/snake weed.

Kannada : Achche gida ( ಅಚ್ಚೆ ಗಿಡ ), Kari haalu soppu (ಕರಿಹಾಲು ಸೊಪ್ಪು )

Malayalam: Nilappala, (നിലപ്പാല)

Since there are a good number of snake weed varieties, due care should be exercised in identifying this Euphorbia Hirta. It has a whitish, reddish tinge and grows lusciously during the rainy seasons.

Habitat:

The herb looks like a climber and can be found in plenty in the banks of rivers and lakes and damp places. This herb is found in India, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Philippines and most of the East Asian countries.

IN AYURVEDA

It pacifies the diseases caused due to Vata & Kapha origin.

Purifies the blood & cures skin diseases, poisonous affections, cough, Asthma and other respiratory disorders.

Leaves  & Seeds – bowel complaints in children & worms.

Juice of this plant – Galactagogue (Increases milk secretion in Lactating mothers)

Also used as a diuretic & Aphrodisiac.

IN SIDDHA MEDICINE

The Siddhars are in praise of this herb’s curative properties. Unlike Ayurveda, E.hirta finds a niche for itself in Siddha system of Medicine. Ammaanpacharisi (அம்மான் பச்சரிசி) in Thamizh language, is long since been used in medicine, as a very important drug in treating so many numbers of diseases. I have tried to enlist a few of them.

A WONDER DRUG IN CORNS

Siddha system of medicine uses this plant as one of the best drugs to treat corn. Hardly we come across herbal remedies in CORN management. This is one of those rare drugs used for its kind. Cut the plant into small pieces and the latex which oozes out of the cut end is applied to the corn. Initially it reduces pain & within the end of the 2nd or 3rd week, the CORN will disappear.

IN ULCERS & FISSURES

Collect a handful of the fresh leaves of this herb and sauté with ghee and green gram. The sauté leaves is an excellent remedy for mouth ulcers, chapped lips and ulcers of the stomach. It is also effective in treating anal fissures.

TO INCREASE LACTATION

The flower of this herb is useful for lactating mothers. For this the flowers are collected and ground to a fine paste using milk. This is then mixed in a glass of milk and taken in the mornings alone for a week. This is found to help in improving milk secretion.

TO REDUCE BODY HEAT & CONSTIPATION

The leaves of the herb are sauté along with garlic and shallots. Make a fine paste of this. This paste (thuvaiyal in Thamizh) is taken with rice. This is found to cure constipation and bring down the body ‘heat’.

TO CURE LEUCORRHOEA (WHITE DISCHARGE)

White discharge in women can be cured with this herb. Leaves of the herb are ground to a paste and then mixed in a glass of buttermilk. This should be taken on empty stomach in the mornings for five days. This is found to cure white discharge.

Application of the paste of the leaves on boils and swellings is found to cure them rather quickly.

During famine in olden days, the leaves & tender shoots of this plants were boiled and eaten in Tamil Nadu.

Thank You
