Vajravalli or Asthishrinkhala is not described by Charaka, Sushrutha and Vagbhata. Nighantus have mentioned it as a potent herb for fracture healing. Kaiyadeva, Bhavamishra etc. have quoted it in their works.
There are two varieties noticed (botanical source may be the same). One will be very thin and possesses two stem surfaces and the other one is quadrangular but very slim compared to the original plant.
Therapeutic uses :-
· In fractures, a mixture of vajravalli, laksha, godhuma(wheat flour) and Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna ) are given along with milk and ghee.
· For the proper conception and to get a male child, the fresh juice of vajravalli is mixed with til oil and taken by the lady.
· In painful and scanty menstruation, the pulp is useful.
· It has anthelminthic property.
· The pulp is also useful in Piles.
· It is used in certain eye diseases.
· It is said to be vrishya (aphrodisiac) in nature.
· It is digestive but increases pitta in the body.
