Thank you tanay ji for the useful link. . .Thank you Murthy ji for sharing the Ethno-medical uses. . .

In Thamizh this plant is called as "Perandai", which is used for making Chutneys with coconut and served with tiffen items as a tasty side dish (they cut it into small pieces and then it is fried with little oil, then seasoned with Mustard, Black gram, small onions etc.,.then it is ground in a mixer with coconut & served) . .Especially this is used as a food during summer season. . .as it is believed to keep our immune system strong to fight against diseases, especially when there is an outbreak of "Chiken pox". Everywhere in tamil nadu it is preferred as a main drug to prevent chicken pox.

As per "Doctrine of signature", the stem is used to treat Bone fractures commonly by the traditional healers. . .it is given both internally & applied externally.

Botanical speciality of this Genera is that. . .here the terminal bud portion of a branch gets modified into tendrils. And the axillary bud grows into a new branch pushing the tendrils to the opposite direction of the leaf. . .it will look as though an opposite leaf has got modifed into tendrils.

Thank you

Vajravalli or Asthishrinkhala  is not described by Charaka, Sushrutha and Vagbhata. Nighantus have mentioned it as a potent herb for fracture healing. Kaiyadeva, Bhavamishra etc. have quoted it in their works.

There are two varieties noticed (botanical source may be the same). One will be very thin and possesses two stem surfaces and the other one is quadrangular but very slim compared to the original plant.

Therapeutic uses :-

·         In fractures, a mixture of vajravalli, laksha, godhuma(wheat flour) and Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna ) are given along with milk and ghee.

·         For the proper conception and to get a male child, the fresh juice of vajravalli is mixed with til oil and taken by the lady.

·         In painful and scanty menstruation, the pulp is useful.

·         It has anthelminthic property.

·         The pulp is also useful in Piles.

·         It is used in certain eye diseases.

·         It is said to be vrishya (aphrodisiac) in nature.

·         It is digestive but increases pitta in the body.

Important formulation :-

    Asthisamharaka taila.
      Regards...
