hi sheji ji,

Tamizh: Kuppaimeni:

A decoction of the leaves is an effective laxative and thus is used with gratifying results in treating constipation. The gresh leaves, introduced in the rectum of small children suffering from constipation, induces free motions.

It is useful as an external application in skin disease. A paste of its fresh leaves can be applied for scabies and other skin diseases, such as syphilitic ulcer, bed sores, maggot infested sores and wounds.

It is highly beneficial in treating croup, a diz mostly occurring in children, It is characterized by cough and difficulty in breathing and is caused by an obstruction in the larynx. This herb is safe to use in this condition and also acts fast. This juice can be administered in doses of 1 teaspoon. The dose may be increased to 4 teaspoons according to the age.

It is good in rheumatoid arthritis. The juice of the fresh leaves is applied mixed with lime and onion. A mixture of the fresh juice and oil can be applied in rheumatoid arthritis.

This herb is also effective in killing intestinal worms. The juice of the leaves or their decoction, mixed with little garlic, can be given for such symptoms.

Thank you Vidhya ji for the wonderful details

Kuppai meni ( குப்பைமேனி), in Thamizh language and a very important drug in Siddha system of medicine. In Ayurveda, no known interesting details are found about this drug. Usually grown as a weed on road sides is a wonder drug in treating mainly Shwasa & Kasa (Asthma & cough)
very well known for its antifungal properties too.
The juice of this plant is mixed along with Lime (Chunnam) is a wonderful & instant remedy in many itches & allergic skin affections
The interesting aspect of this drug is that, it was very well used in Loha vidya (Indian Alchemy) by the siddhars (the rishis or munis who lived in South India, excelled in Ashta Maha Siddhis and authored the texts of Siddha medicine & Alchemy), to convert lower metals into higher.
When i was a school going student, i had a Thamizh teacher by name (Late) Mr. Aranganaadhan, a scholarly person in Thamizh language & a researcher in Siddha system of medicine & Alchemy, explaining this drug once during his deliberation. He had alleged to say that this drug was used by the siddhars in Alchemy. He used to say that a little quantity of Mercury when rubbed with the juice of this plant would convert mercury into a totally watery substance by loosing all its metallic properties. I haven't tested it, but thought to share this point as i remembered, which might interest curious readers to prove this claim!!!

Thank You
Dr. Hari Venkatesh. K. Rajaraman
