CONTROVERSY OF THE DRUG
Some Scholars consider this plant in the name of HAMSAPADI (हंसपादि). But Hamsapadi is actually taken to be Adiantum lunulatum of Polypodiaceae. Most of the texts mention the term TRIPADI ( त्रिपादि) to this plant. But still the controversy continues to exist.
SYSTEMS OF MEDICINE:
Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani & Folk
IN AYURVEDA
Mainly used in Burn wounds & as a Galactagogue.
THE ROOT
Carminative, Tonic, Diuretic, Bilious complaints
DIARRHOEA IN CHILDREN
The leaves are ground with cow’s milk and given in Diarrhoea in children mainly due to Indigestion & also in Convulsions.
IN ABSCESS & WOUNDS
The juice of the fresh plant is applied to abscesses, Wounds & Chiefly in Burns to promote quick healing.
TO INCREASE LACTATION
The Juice or decoction of the whole plant is used to increase milk secretion in Lactating Mothers.
OTHER DISEASES
Cough, Bronchitis, Flatulence, Burning sensation, Pruritis.
IN SIDDHA MEDICINE
This plant is known as ‘Sirupulladi’( சிறுபுல்லடி) in Thamizh Language & almost used for the same purposes as explained above.
MODERN PHARMACOLOGY
Ethanolic extract of plant is Diuretic, CNS depressant.
Chloroform soluble root alkaloids are Spasmolytic, Sympathomimetic, CNS stimulant.
PHYTO CHEMISTRY
Leaf / root – contains alkaloids, Indole-3-acetic acid, Tyramine, Trigonnelline, Hypaphorine.
