Dear All,

Herewith are two market samples of priyangu. Please confirm if any of these is the real priyangu.

Both seems entirely different from each other. Which are the main adulterants for priyangu?

Regards,

Reshmi

Dear Reshmi ji...

The local Priyangu variety in your post needs further clarification... This seems to be an important documentation here... Am sure it is not of Callicarpa sps.

Priyangu finds many sources in various parts of the country...
As per the Classical explanations, the two varieties are Dhanya Priyangu & Gandha Priyangu

Dhanya Priyangu has been identified as Setaria italica, without much controversy.

But the source of Gandha Priyangu is debated always..

3 species are commonly used in the name of Priyangu across the Country.
1. Fruits of Aglaia roxburghiana
2. Fruits of Callicarpa macrophylla and also Callicarpa tomentosa.
3. Nuts or Seed Kernels of Prunus mahaleb.

I think the second post of yours may be the fruits or seeds of Callicarpa macrophylla (just a guess).

Adding a link to a Picture of the seeds of Prunus mahaleb...

Another link to the picture of the inflorescence of Aglaia roxburghiana (Syn: Aglaia elaeagnoidea)

Thank you very much Hari. We were sure that the 1st picture sample was not priyangu.

The second picture that I have posted also has resemblance to the fruits of Aglaia roxburghiana. This sample was procured from a draw drug merchant in Jalandhar.

Actually, I have requested Dr Somit ( PG Scholar, DGV at Koppa) to help in procuring a sample of priyangu collected from an original source there.

With regards,

Reshmi
