hello everybody!!
I am hereby sharing some information about Canarium strictum...also i request every one to share their views and informations regarding this drug which would prove very helpful to me as this is the selected drug for my thesis work.

Canarium strictum Roxb.

Family - burseraceae

It is considered as one of the South India’s heavily harvested resin tree. It yields resin known as black dammar.

Vernacular names:

English : black dammar tree

Hindi : kala dammar

Kannada : haalu maddi, kari dhupa, manda dhoopa, maddi dhoopa

Tamil :attam, karunkungiliyam, karungundurukkam

Telugu : nallarojanamu

Malayalam : kungiliyam, kunturukka payan, telli

Marati : dhoop, kaladammar, ral dhup

 

Threat status:

Vulnerable (A 1 c,d) - KA, KL & TN

Medicinal uses:

Its usage among tribal and folk people for medicinal purposes in different parts of India have been explored through ethno-botanical studies. It is also used in Siddha system of medicine.It is used in rheumatism, fever, cough, asthma, epilepsy, chronic skin disorders.

Commercial uses:

finds its usage in incense and varnish industries. It is also used as a substitute for burgundy pitch in making medicinal plasters.

The timber is used for matchboxes and cheap utility furnitures.The seed kernel is edible and oil from it is used in confectionery.

Hari ji ... here is pronounciation and meaning of Canarium strictum compiled from Dave's Botanary [ http://davesgarden.com/guides/botanary/ ]

kuh-NAIR-ee-um -- from the Moluccan vernacular name, kanari for this genus         
STRIK-tum -- erect, upright
