Of course it is the state flower of Kerala State..Especially on the
day of the "Sauramaana Ugadi"(New year), ["Vishu" in Kerala] which
falls in the midst of April, the flowers are adored & worshiped in
Kerala...To be more precise...the people of kerala wake up on the day
of Ugadi and open up their eyes to first see the flowers of this
tree...as it is a traditional practice that had flown through ages in
the Kerala State..which emphasizes the sanctity of this handsome
tree..
Sanskrit: Aaragvadha, Krutamaala, Chaturangula, Aarevatha,
Deerghaphala, Raajavruksha, Vyadhighata, Shampaaka,Suvarnabhushana,
Swarna shephaalika, Swarnavruksha, Drumotpala, Aarogyashimbi,
Vyathaanthanka, Karnikaara, Hemapushpa, Kundali, Aamaha, , Kokaha
etc.,
English: Indian laburnum, Purging cassia (the fruit pulp is a
Purgative and hence given to cure Constipation)
Equally this plant is one of the Antique medicinal plants known to
Indian tradition…
In Vedas, the dried branches of Aragvadha were used in rituals..
The main three Texts in Ayurveda (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita &
Ashtanga Sangraha) have delineated the uses of the plant parts in
various diseases..
The 2nd chapter of Charaka samhita text is named as “Aragvadadiyam
Adhyayam” implies the emphasis laid by our Ancient authors to this
plant..
Medicinal Value:
Most of the Ayurvedic texts explain its usage in all the type of Skin
diseases.
-A Kashaya(decoction) made out of the bark of this tree mainly, along
with many other plants is a very well known medicine to cure Skin
diseases even today.. It is available in the market in the name of
"Aragvadadhi Kashayam".
-Also a naturally fermented alcohol is also made out of this plant
used to treat the same condition called as “AragvadArishtam” (Not in
vogue).
-The leaf of this plant is also used as an external application to
cure skin diseases.
-The fruit pulp is sweet in taste and it is indicated in children to
cure Constipation
- In Jaundice the fruit pulp is given along with sugarcane juice,
fortified with Trikatu group of drugs (Dried Ginger, Pepper & Long
pepper ).
-Also its used in Diabetes, Hrudroga(Cardiac diseases),
Amavata(Rheumatism), Vatarakta(Gout), Vrana(Wounds) and Jwara(Fevers).
Phytochemicals:
Root bark possesses Tannin, phlobaphenes, Oxy-anthraquinones
Leaf, Fruit pulp – Glycosides, Sennosides A&B(responsible for the
purgative effect)
Stem bark – tannins(in Butanol extract), Lupeol(in Benzene extract),
Beta Sitosterol, Hexacosanol
Flowers- proanthocyanidin, Kaempferol
Modern Pharmacological Actions:
-Leaves stimulate interferon activity.
-Pod & Stem bark’s ethanol extract is said to be antiviral,
Anticancerous, Hypoglycemic, Antipyretic.
