Dear Sheji Ji... Thanks for posting Aerva lanata(Syn: Achyranthes lanata), Amaranthaceae...

Thank You Dinesh ji for the Regional names...

Dear members,

Though it is taken in the name of Goraksha ganja (derived from the Gujarati name Gorakha ganjo), some reputed Scholars from Ayurvedic field consider this plant as PASHANABHEDA.

The details are below...

CONTROVERSY OF PASHANABHEDA

The term literally means

Pashana – which means stone.

Bheda – to break.

Either this ambiguous naming was due to its effect in breaking the stones of the Kidney or Bladder(The action) or the habitat of the plant which breaks the stones & rocks and grows out. (The habitat).

Across the country, we come across lot many drugs being used in the name of Pashana bheda(one of the most controversial drugs in the field of Ayurveda), of which Aerva lanata becomes one of the chief sources of the plant in the Southern India, Rajasthan & Gujarat.

The Physicians of Tamil Nadu(Siddha Medicine) & Andhra states use this plant as one of the best drugs in curing Renal Stones.

In Thamizh Language it is called as Sirupoolai, the root of which is used by the Siddha physicians unlike the Ayurvedic Physicians who prefer the plant as a whole.

When screened across the Northern Belt, Rajasthan & Gujarat states too consider the same plant as Pashanabheda. Infact, Aerva lanata was exhibited as Pashanabheda at the All India Ayurvedic Congress held at Jaipur, in the later half of 20th Century.

The text - NIGHANTU SANGRAHA (1893 AD)

The Author of the text Nighantu Sangraha(1893 AD), the late Raghunath Indraji of Gujarat popularly known as Kathobhatta delineates this plant as Pashanabheda. Where in he states that this plant is named as Gorakha Ganjo in Gujarati, and he admits that he used this plant as Pashanabheda.

Another plant of the same Genera taller & more tomentose is also taken as Pashanabheda, which has been equated to be Aerva javonica. This plant is also seen to have grown in Gujarat. (Ref: Some Controversial Drugs in Indian Medicine, by Vaidya Bapalal)

... but in Kerala this plant has been named as Cheroola & grouped as one of the drugs in DASHAPUSHPA (Group of ten flowers – which are believed to curb the incentive for sinful acts, destroy the causative factors of all unhealthy features & bestow good health and Prosperity). They don’t consider this plant to be a source of PASHANABHEDA.

Interesting fact which adds up to the controversy here is that, in some parts of Kerala, this is considered as one of the sources for “SHVETHA BRUHATI” , which is exactly taken to be Solanum indicum.

MEDICINAL USES

The plant is a Diuretic, Lithontriptic (Dissolves the stones in Kidney or bladder)

Useful in Haematemesis (Blood vomiting), arrests haemorrhage associated with Pregnancy.

Also used in Diabetes mellitus, Cephalgia, Cough, Boils.
