Common name: Bilva

It is also popularly known as Vilam Palam (tamil விளாம் பழம்),Bilva, Bilwa, Bel, Kuvalam, Koovalam (in Malayalam), Madtoum, or Beli fruit, Bengal quince, stone apple,Maredu (in Telugu),in Sindhi ڪاٺ گدرو and wood apple. The tree, which is the only species in the genus.

Sanskrit names:Bilva,Śalātu, Hṛdyagandha, Karkaṭa, Samirasāraka,Śivadruma,Triśikha, Śiveṣhṭa, Dūrāruha, Lakṣmī phala, Śalya, Mahākapithya etc.[1]

In Javanese language it is called Maja which lent its name to Majapahit empire, since its capital was built on former betel forest.

Habit

It is a tree with strong axillary thorns and trifoliat leaves. fruits are round in shape , woody with orang-coloured sweet aromatic pulp.


Distribution

Throughout india on plains and perfers dry climate.

Medicnal uses of Aegle marmelos

Leaves and fruits are used in medicine. fruits cotain mucilage and pectin; and are used in the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery. its pulp gives cooling effect, hence used for preparing "sharbat". unripe fruits used for improving appetite. Fruit pulp used in ayurvedic medicine.

The roots, skin, fruits and the leaves of the Bilva tree are used for medicinal purpose.  Bilva has astringent, edema lessening, anti-diarrhea, laxative and appetizer properties hence, can be used to cure both internal and external diseases.

Bilva is considered to be the best Saiigrahika and Dipaniya drug being vata kapha hara (C.S.Su.25). Bilva Patra is however vãtahara only (C.S.S.27). Suruta quoted Bilva as Rasayana (S.S.Ci.27). Bilva is also called Siva Druma (Lord Siva's favourite tree) is held sacred by Hindus, the leaves being offered in prayers to iva & Parvati. As Chopra aptly puts it, "No drug has been longer better known, more appreciated by the inhabitants of India than bael fruits". Different parts of the tree are used in ancient medicine viz, root (vatakaraj; stem (Hridroga hara or Jvara hara), leaves (Madhumeha hara), Apakva phala (sangrahi) and pakva phala (laxative).

Thank you Dinesh ji for updating the names...

i too had thought to correct the Tamil name given by Unni ji from Wikipedia...it has been wrongly said to be as Vilaam pazham which is actually Feronia elephantum.. i had corrected that term in wikipedia but forgot to update it as Vilvam here...anyways you had neatly done it..
