leaves - horizontally spreading ,7-15 cm long,broadly ovate with round base

 

flowers - white with purplish spot, with lanceolate bracts,with a lip cleft in the centre

 

rhizome - aromatic

The rhizomes of this plant is one among the market available sources(since 17th century) of the drug Shati ( शटी). Though the actual source of Shati being Hedychium spicatum, some people even consider Curcuma zeodaria(market source before 17th cent AD) to be the exact source. Kaempferia galanga comes in the name of Kachoora or Karchura (Trade name) in the market.

Kachoradi Choorna is made into paste with milk or warm water and
applied over the forehead, in the evening hours or just before bed
time for the treatment of insomnia.
It is also applied over the feet, for the same purpose.
For the best of my knowledge, Kottakkal and AVN are only the two
companies manufacturing this product.

Janardanji even i have seen traditional vaidys mixing Kachuradi churna
with Ksheerabala Avarties. which is even better in insomnia. Also
Kachuradi Churna is better than Rasnadi churna for new born as it is
Mild. And as Kachuradi churna is very important yoga it is prepaird by
almost all pharmacies in Kerala as S.N.A, Vaidyaratnam etc.
