The Federal REAL ID Act became effective nationwide on May 11, 2008. Florida began issuing REAL ID compliant credentials after January 1, 2010. Because Florida is a REAL ID compliant state, Florida driver licenses and ID cards are accepted nationwide as official identification for domestic air travel and access to military bases and most Federal facilities.

Starting in August 2017, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will begin issuing a new, more secure Florida driver license and ID card. The new credential provides Floridians the most secure over-the-counter credential on the market today.

All medical data is kept confidential and will only be used by the MVA to determine your qualifications to drive.

Once the liabilities have been resolved, the MVA will be notified that the hold on the driver's license or vehicle registration renewal/transfer has been lifted. Please allow up to 2 business days after the receipt of payment or approved payment plan for the hold to be released.

This successful initiative is expanding to other states for in-vehicle, on-road test trials of the breath technology with sober drivers in naturalistic settings. That same year, the Program expanded on-road testing to include controlled, in-vehicle tests with drinking passengers, to determine how the sensors respond to real-world conditions. Those tests continue today through the Harvard University-affiliated McClean Hospital.
