Hillary --
The Senate is about to vote once again on the Fast Track bill for the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership.
We've already shown that progressives can derail Fast Track. DFA members like you helped Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders block the first cloture vote on Fast Track back in May. Then you helped House Democrats block Fast Track at the beginning of June.
Last week Republicans and the White House came up with a new strategy to get around progressive opposition and pass Fast Track. They separated the Fast Track bill from the Trade Adjustment Assistance bill that helps workers who lost their jobs due to foreign trade. The House passed the Fast Track bill on Friday. The Senate is due to vote on Tuesday.
There are 14 Senate Democrats who voted for Fast Track in May. Almost all of them voted for Fast Track because it included Trade Adjustment Assistance. Now those 14 Senate Democrats are going to be asked to vote for Fast Track in exchange for a mere promise from John Boehner and Mitch McConnell that they'll pass Trade Adjustment Assistance at some later date. President Obama has said he'll sign Fast Track without Trade Adjustment Assistance.
These Senate Democrats have a choice: stand with Elizabeth Warren, Sherrod Brown, and Bernie Sanders against Fast Track, or side with Republicans against American workers. If just four of those fourteen Senators switch their vote from yes to no, we can stop Fast Track again.
Your Senator, Bill Nelson, is one of the 14 Democrats whose vote we need to flip on Tuesday. Will you call Sen. Nelson and urge them to vote NO on Fast Track for the job-killing TPP?
One of these fourteen Senators, Maria Cantwell, may already be flipping her vote. Last week she told Inside U.S. Trade that she plans to vote no on Fast Track because it won't be linked to Trade Adjustment Assistance.
That's a start. But the big corporations are putting intense pressure on the Senate Democrats to sell out American workers and pass Fast Track. Last week on MSNBC's The Ed Show, Bernie Sanders explained why Fast Track keeps coming back after progressives have blocked it:
Corporate America is not going to stand still. They love the idea of outsourcing jobs to low-wage countries. The pharmaceutical industry loves the idea of being able to charge poor people around the world higher prices for their medicine. These guys are not going to give up.
The big corporations are not going to give up. Neither will we. DFA members have been national leaders in the fight against Fast Track. We need your help one more time.
The Senate is about to vote on Fast Track again. Senator Bill Nelson is one of the 14 Democrats whose vote we need to change. Can you call Sen. Nelson today and urge them to vote no on Fast Track?
Thank you for making the call.
