Here's some useful word acquisition info

From a pretty sweet LS at another school

For CMs who are writing word acquisition lesson plans, here is a resource offered by TFA.  A long time ago, we used to get the collection of little books on various topics.  Today, those books are housed electronically.

The title of the book is "Elementary Literacy."  The most applicable chapter for today is Chapter 4, pages 102-109.  It has lists of the most common Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes.  It has rationale and benefit for teaching students word learning strategies for explaining why we are going it.

In the CMIM, a sample plan on page 771, shows what it might look like.

Here's a sample of what it might look like in the lesson plan in a 10-15 minute block.

1 MIN - Opening

What - What are we doing?

Why - Why are we doing it?

2 MIN - Introduction to New Material - I DO  (think aloud or demonstrate how to do use or do the concept)

5 MIN - Guided Practice - WE DO  (practice together - Whole class / practice together - in pairs or small teams 1-2 tasks).

1 MIN - Summarize what we are doing and how it is beneficial.

3 MIN - Independent Practice - YOU DO  (practice alone and then share  OR just practice alone 1-2 tasks).

3 MIN - Closing (Share final answers, Summarize in your own words how to use the word learning strategy)

It might be helpful to post or to forward the link with the address and the zip file to CMs as you feel appropriate!

I’ve also added a link to my website where you can find the PDF of the entire Elementary Literacy text:http://rememberit.org/tfa.aspx.
