Some apartment bathrooms are just not big enough to fit a full- or even half-size tub, unless one considers the extra space already required for standing and walking. This clever flip-down solution makes room for lying down in the bath, but retracts when not in use.
The (Tulip) name was derived by Piotr Pyrtek from the way in which the unit seems to blossom open, as well as the tulip’s versatility in the world of plants. When upright, the enclosure prevents splashing and contains steam for showering. When flipped open, the vertical portion provides a place to lean against along the back surface.
Luxuries are not lost despite the small footprint of this pod within the larger layout – high-powered massagers, underwater jets and other digitally-controlled bathing bonuses are all part of the experience. Finally, the design takes its colors from nature – tulip white and natural green.
At first this transparent tub looks appealing – perhaps even moreso to some when they see a girl perched on the promotional photograph about to get in. But those of us who like our privacy, one has to wonder: what happens when this woman steps out of the frame and into the bath with those windows wide open all around?
To be sure, this bathtub from Gruppo has every luxury feature one could wish for. While not quite a walk-in, stepping into the spacious interior gives one access to hydro-massage and hydrothermal spa options for relaxing and working out muscle tension. This fixture also comes equipped with radio, audio players and headphone adapters all in reach – as well as remote to use them with and headrest to lie back on.
So, in many regards this would be a spectacular all-in-one high-tech bathtub even if the sides were not made of thick glass. Still, for those of us who like to think of a bath as a solitary, private and relaxing place to close your eyes, lean back and meditate, the idea of open sides – even if no one else is around – may seem a little too geared for the amateur exhibitionist.
Does your ideal soaking experience involve a classic clawfoot corner-tub design, stark contemporary bathtub or something as informal and relaxing as a hammock? Whether you like the modest natural wood look or prefer the rather flashy (pun half-intended) see-through varieties, there is a luxury bathtub in this collection to fit virtually any bathroom personality and personal taste.
Offered by HighTech this elegantly curved wooden tub seems anything but, well, high tech – save maybe the smooth cylindrical metal fixtures that service the stand-alone, naturally-finished basin. Pebbles around the base replace the need for conventional tile. They provide a nice textured and traction-friendly surface for bare feet catch, but equally important: they channel and ultimately drain any overflow (or excess water should the wood turn leaky).
Another integrated wood-and-pebble option offered from Laguna takes things in a slightly different direction, with an emphasis on shiny surfaces, symmetrical curves, built-in chrome fixtures and a highly-contained moat for small rocks right around the upper rim of the tub itself.
Simple, handmade, lacquered-wood tubs from Ofuro reflect a minimalist-but-craft-oriented attention to detail that aligns with traditional Japanese design approaches. Just how you never damage and have to fix this unique creation -repair on custom-finished wood is not a trivial task.
Bright, LED-lit bathtubs designed by Jan Puylaert make a bold statement – and yes, you can adjust the color setting to scroll between green, blue, orange, yellow and other lighting options or set them to a single static color as desired.
This particular jetted lounging tub from Wasauna is somewhat peculiar, with a combination of transparent plexiglass sides and cushioned seats that make it look as much like a mid-century modern lounge chair as a water-soaking basin. Best of all, a freestanding tub solution like those listed here are easier to install, remodel, repair, reglaze or refinish as needed.
There is something downright uncomfortable about the proportions of a conventional bathtub. Lounging is rarely easy – you are stuck either too upright in a seating position or too flat on your back. Not so in this innovative bathtub design by Stone Forest.

But what is really for sale here? Close inspection reveals that the experience of these baths and feel of their surrounding spaces is tied to more than merely the deceptively smooth and largely free-standing quarried-and-cut stone tubs themselves.
Surrounding hardwood or stone floor and wall planks and tiles, stone basins and other natural decor as well as less visible elements (such as the overall amount and type lighting) are also key parts of these designer bathrooms as shown in the ideal settings represented within these pictures.
The lesson in all of this? If you are planning to recreate the full experience of a miniature spa setting in your own home, you might need to look beyond simply buying a luxury stone bathtub and at the larger interior design picture.
