Here are the details for January 2020 at Boaters.

Please note that from January 2020 Jazz at Boaters gigs will only be once a month rather than every week. These gigs will happen on the last Sunday of the month. After 29 years it is sad to lose the gig on a weekly basis, but at least we have one Sunday a month to look forward to. Sadly, this decision was made from a money making point of view, so we have to make every effort to ensure that the monthly gig is as successful as possible.

=====
Sunday 26th January - COMMON GROUND

This is a new project, which will bring grooves, improvisation and playing of the highest order for your listening pleasure. You can expect a selection of contemporary jazz, funk, latin and fusion classics by the likes of Pat Metheny, The Yellowjackets, Steps Ahead and The Brecker Brothers, plus some original compositions thrown in for good measure. The band is a collaboration between some of London’s finest musicians.

On saxophone is Tim Whitehead, one of the most respected players and composers on the British jazz scene who has repeatedly been hailed for his gorgeous sound on the tenor sax and infinite vocabulary. He was the first ever musician Artist in Residence at Tate Britain and has been commissioned to write and perform music in response to the work of JMW Turner. His live performances are breath taking and not to be missed.

On piano is Simon Carter, a graduate of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra whose career has led him to play with artists such as Jamiroquai, Craig David, Nik Kershaw and The Dire Straits Experience. He toured the world with guitarist Ronny Jordan, one of the originators of the Acid Jazz movement, and has also played with many international smooth jazz artists on their trips to Europe, such as Marc Antoine, Jeff Kashiwa and Mindi Abair.

Drummer Elliott Henshaw is one of the UK’s finest and most prolific drummers whose versatility places him within all genres at the very highest level. He co-runs “Spice Fusion”, one of the most exciting big bands in Europe and has played with Shirley Bassey, Leo Sayer, The BBC Big Band, Georgie Fame, David Benoit, Eric Marienthal and Bob Mintzer.

On bass, and instigator of this project is Dave Jones, who has played with The Ronnie Scott’s Soul and Jazz Orchestra, the Pete Cater Big Band and has been a major contributor to The Way Out West Jazz Collective. He leads his own bands including The Dave Jones Nonet and Dave Jones Affinity.
