23rd March 1931 Shaheed: A Tribute to the Martyrs of India's Freedom Struggle

23rd March 1931 Shaheed is a 2002 Hindi-language historical biographical film directed by Guddu Dhanoa, which depicts the events leading up to the hanging of Bhagat Singh and his companions Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar on 23 March 1931. The film stars Bobby Deol as Bhagat Singh, his elder brother Sunny Deol as Chandra Shekhar Azad and Amrita Singh as Vidyavati Kaur, Bhagat's mother. The film also features Aishwarya Rai in a special appearance as Mannewali, a love interest of Bhagat Singh.

The film portrays the life and struggle of Bhagat Singh, a revolutionary leader who sacrificed his life for the cause of India's independence from British colonial rule. The film shows how Bhagat Singh joined the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) led by Chandra Shekhar Azad, and participated in various acts of defiance and resistance against the British authorities. The film also depicts how Bhagat Singh avenged the death of his mentor Lala Lajpat Rai, who was brutally beaten by the police during a protest march. Bhagat Singh and his associates assassinated John Saunders, a British police officer who was responsible for Lala Lajpat Rai's death, and threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly to protest against the repressive laws imposed by the British government. The film also shows how Bhagat Singh and his comrades faced torture and trial in prison, and how they bravely accepted their death sentence with slogans of "Inquilab Zindabad" (Long live the revolution).

23rd March 1931 Shaheed is a film that pays homage to the martyrs of India's freedom struggle, and celebrates their courage and patriotism. The film also highlights the relevance and importance of Bhagat Singh's ideology and vision for a free and democratic India. The film features some patriotic songs composed by Anand Raj Anand, such as "Mera Rang De Basanti Chola", "Pagdi Sambhal Jatta" and "Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna". The film also has a song by Aishwarya Rai called "Jogiya Ve", which is a romantic number set in the pre-independence era.

23rd March 1931 Shaheed was released on 7 June 2002, coinciding with another film based on Bhagat Singh directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and titled The Legend of Bhagat Singh. Both films failed at the box office, but gained a cult status among the fans of Bhagat Singh and his legacy. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol, but criticized the direction, screenplay and historical accuracy of the film. The film won one award at the Zee Cine Awards for Best Action Director (Tinu Verma).
