Gratitude for Christmas
We all read the news. It’s so hard to have hope for our world when violence begets violence and industrial machinery is deployed to destroy tender, defenseless children and their families. We mourn, grieve and rage for so many parts of our assaulted world. Our attention to one searing tragedy is fractured by the next outrage.
Closer to home, winter in Michigan is rain and a heavy gray fog that lights only barely penetrate, when we should see bright, sparkling snow. In our county, greed has so warped our approach to housing that we have $2,500 per month luxury apartments, while some of our most vulnerable loved ones, families with children, the elderly, people with disabling mental illness and addiction disorders, survive or don't in vehicles, tents and stairwells.
In the middle of this dark oppression, you created a Christmas day of light, generosity and the joy of compassionate connection. Your homemade foods – the soul nourishing hams, turkeys, green bean casseroles, potatoes and dazzling treats – communicated your bright love. For the time and gifts you shared, the abundance you created, your seeing of our friends and neighbors, the creation of a loving community, we are so grateful.
Each and every thing you gave and did, every kindness and generosity, matters. In the middle of the fog and gloom, you brought light. Thank you for showing that we can hold that light for each other and together, be the loving community we hope for our city, county and world.
