How's it going, y'all?

I finished Chapter 1 a while back and haven't poked at it since. I'm
mostly reading for the Euterpea bits so far, as I've some prior
Haskell exposure. Chapter 2 looks like it will get more into the
computer music bits, so I'm excited about that.

Cheers,

Urgh. I haven't made any progress past the first chapter. Need to try and get it up and running, but was discouraged to see it was going to be so involved. And been a bit distracted since then. Finally have some time now though.

Is the consensus that "whoah this looks like a PITA, maybe we should
do something different"? That's what I'm reading into the responses of
the silent majority.

Just because we think the topics are interesting (Haskell and Computer
Music) doesn't make this the right book to learn them from. I'm
willing to throw it out and try something else that's more
approachable, where folks won't feel they need to block out a whole
day to begin to maybe start to play with it. :)

I am going to go through this book regardless since I have wanted to learn Haskell and if this doesn't get me then nothing will… so don't take my silence for wanting to do something different. :-)

I've just been swamped this past month. I probably will be for a month or two more. More people are on board now and more will be coming to handle the increasing load from a particular client. So I expect that in a month or two, between more bodies and more experience with these legacy codebases, I won't be so swamped.

Like TJ, I've wanted to delve into Haskell more. So I will do this book. I just may not make much progress for a while.  :-/   :-)

If folks just want to learn Haskell to start, I recently became aware
of FPComplete's School of Haskell: https://www.fpcomplete.com/school

Looks like the most polished offering out there for learning Haskell
to date, and the IDE and toolchain are in the cloud, so no obnoxious
installation process before you get going. :)

I, too, read only chapter 1.

I think I’m finding that for a book club I much prefer books that are meant for reading (like the one on User Stories) over books and tutorials that are meant to be more interactive.  Just one datapoint. :)

I haven't given up yet. I'd like to at least attempt to get further in this book. The real interesting stuff is still ahead. I read a bit more last night, and hope to set up the toolchain stuff tonight or tomorrow.

Teaching next week though, so that may stall progress for a bit longer. It would be nice, I think, if a few of us could get further along and report on how it is going.
