Hi Will,
I noticed this a few weeks ago:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1991-bmw-e34-m5-drivetrain-s38b36/
Just what you’re looking for but you’re just about a month late to this party. You might be able to put your 3.6 specific parts onto a 3.5 or maybe a 3.8 motor. As you know, the B35 is not from an E34, and the B38 has totally different engine electronics. Why not just drop the pan, inspect, and do only the bearings? I’m not sure, but you probably have to pull the motor to do the mains, but the rod bearings could be replaced in situ.
Even at 200-300 thousand miles, you could probably go a while longer with the pistons unless oil consumption or compression is intolerable. Don’t quote me, but I recall the spec for oil consumption on the B35 (actually an M88/3) was around a quart every -400-500 miles. I rebuilt mine near that level because the smoke on deceleration was annoying and concerning to others at the track. The B36 and 38 have a lot better oil control anyway.
Regards, Chris Richards

Gary, you aren’t wrong and your LS runs pretty darn well. I would not swap one into an M5 chassis though, but that’s the purist in me. You saved a non M5 so that’s fine.

Thanks guys - good info.
Years ago I tried out Mobil-1 0W50 and didn't use it after the
first change because at idle with a warm engine the pressure would
go to zero and the warning light came on. I did get noticeably
better gas mileage.
BTW I know it's dumb to concern myself with gas mileage on a M5
but it's a life-long habit and I have a little note book where I
keep track at every fill up. On a trip at 65/70 mph I could see 25
to 27 mpg, but these days around the back roads I will average
maybe 18 or 20 if I'm lucky.
Gary how does a double relief work?

This is interesting to me who knows little about technical engine stuff....who knew that oil pressure could get too high? I always figured that the oil pump did it's thing and it was all good. Always something to learn.
In any case my original question is answered...I can interchange
synthetic and conventional oils. From this discussion it seems I
can extend my change interval from my usual 4K to say 6K miles if
I use synthetic?
I have noticed that the Mobil-1 15W50 has been a little scarce.
At Napa the other day I declined buying it by the quart because it
was $10-something each...they don't carry the 5-quart containers.
Then yesterday I found it at Walmart for under $25 per 5-quart
jug. That's a bargain so I bought 3 of them.
Thanks again,
Bill K
Right. I guess my track days with the M5 are over. It's too much
of a risk with a car like this, although we have seen three track
days with it some years ago (when it wasn't worth as much and
parts were pretty much available).
Do you track your LS-motor car?

475 HP and you haven't been on a track for 9 years? Where do you
go to go fast? Wait.... I don't want to know.
We have a drag strip nearby in Epping NH which I have considered
from time to time but haven't done that yet. The M5 is not great
as a dragster anyway...now if I could get a bit of a rolling start
we'd be a force to contend with.
The E46 M3...our son had a coupe which he used the same day I
took the M5 to NH Motor Speedway. For me, the E46 M3 is BMW's best
ever. But I still smile when I remember how, after him filling my
mirrors and having to give him and others a passby all the time
(my left arm was out the window so much I was driving mostly
one-handed) he was on my tail coming into the front straight and
swung out to pass, and I floored it in third gear....he couldn't
get past me until I reluctantly slowed before the end of the
straight. His instructor said to him about the M5 "That thing has
a lot of motor".
I'd love to get out to O'Fest, and maybe someday, but I'm
dropping my CCA membership too. It's not the Roundel it used to
be. Politics and gender issues etc. manage to creep their way into
every aspect of our lives these days and I just want to step away
from that. I enjoy reading articles like yours Gary, a few years
ago, and Rob Siegel's stuff every issue, but lately it's not worth
the subscription price.
Anyway I appreciate everyone's input here. Maybe we should start a E34 M5 magazine.... bi-yearly.
