Two-day workshop on
Research Methodologies and Technical Writing Skills

5, 6 July 2013 (Friday and Saturday), 9am-5.30pm
Golden Jubilee seminar Hall, ECE Dept, Indian Institute of Science

While India is considered a knowledge power, the research output is very
less, according to worldwide surveys. It is a welcome note that there is
increasing awareness and interest to take up research. However there is
very little organized information on what is research, why to do research,
how to do research, how to choose the topic/guide, how to do literature
survey, how to write research papers, how to present in conferences, how to
publish/ patent, how to use latex, and various other aspects. IEEE student
Branch at IISc is organizing a two-day workshop for the benefit of IISc
students, to address these issues in a systematic way. It is hoped that the
workshop will also be useful to all those interested to take up research
work in the near future, or those who have just started. So the workshop is
made open to non-iisc IEEE student members as well, subject to availability
of seats.

By attending this workshop, the participants will learn the basic skills
that are essential for becoming a successful researcher and also how to
produce a good Ph.D. thesis. Anyone with the passion for doing good
research is welcome.

The major portion of the  course will be delivered by Prof. N
Sundararajan,  IEEE Fellow and a distinguished professor from NTU
Singapore, with wide experience in Academics and Industry in India and
Abroad (please see the appended biography). We also have an introductory
talk by Prof. Rudra Pratap, Chairman, Center for Excellence in Nano Science
and Engineeirng, IISc. We also have a talk on Time management for Research
by Prof.Anurag Kumar, IEEE Fellow, Divisional Chairman of Electrical
Sciences, Indian Institute of Science. A former Ph.D. Student of IISc Dr.
Satya Sudhakar Y, would demonstrate how to use latex. Mr. Uday Shankar, the
chair, IEEE student Branch will briefly explain about IEEE-IISc Student
Branch outreach program that aims to introduce IISc research culture to all
IEEE student members.

The course is organized into six one-and-half hour talks, plus two
half-an-hour introductory and concluding talks. The main topics that are
covered are:

1. Importance of Research.
2. Research Preparation and planning.
3. Research Sources and Review.
4. Academic writing and oral presentation.
5. Time planning for Research
6. Research Ethics.
7. General Advise to Ph.D. Students.
8. Demonstration on use of Latex.
9. IEEE-IIlso create a reigstrtion portal.Sc outreach program.

Registration:
Please register by 2 July 2013 on the website: ieee-iisc.org

A nominal registration fee of Rs.1500 is charged for IEEE members (and Rs.
2000/- for non IEEE members) which includes lunch, tea, workshop kit,
arrangements, etc. All participants will get a participation certificate.
The registration fee is payable by Demand Draft  in favor of “IEEE-IISc
student branch”, payable at Bangalore. The DD may be given on the spot, but
the registration is necessary by due date along with DD number.
Registration is free for IISc student members, but they need to register on
the web like everyone else, and they are not provided lunch (they are
requested to co-operate !). Outstation participants are required to make
their own stay/travel arrangements. The Chair, IEEE student branch reserves
the right to limit the registration or number of non-iisc participants,
based on the logistics, on first-come-first-served basis.
