Hello, I wish u and ur family a  happy Sankranthi in advance…..

Sankranti or Makara Sankramana is the period when Sun moves or shifts to Makara rashi ( Capricorn ). From this day starts Uttarayana. Weather starts changing from this time which has some effect on our health. Before knowing why Sankranti is celebrated we will know something about Dhanurmaasa which comes before Sankranti.

Dhanurmaasa
Dhanurmaasa comes in the month of December when winter is high. During this time, those who follow Dhanurmaasa wakeup early in the morning and prepare Huggi ( a kind of sweet ) present it to God (Naivadya) and have it. In short, during winter our body looses more heat. To maintain the heat balance we need to intake heat producing things. Hence Huggi is consumed which produces heat. Now at the end of this month ( maasa ) body does not contain as much fat needed by it. Next is summer and in order to face it body should gain some fat before it starts.

Why Sankramana?
Sankramana starts at the end of Dhanurmaasa. It falls in Pushya Maasa which is the indication of beginning of summer. As a precaution , to avoid any problems, due to heat in summer due to lack of fat it is advised to intake things that have oil in them. Out of navadhanyas prescribed for each Planet "Yellu ( Sesame Seed )" is the one which contains oil. Hence it was preferred to use it. But too much intake of it causes Pitta. Hence jaggery should be taken with it. It should be noted here that jaggery also causes Pitta (heat). But as said "Diamond cuts Diamond" here Pitta removes pitta. These things when taken before the start of summer produces the fat which helps to maintain the heat balance and thus keeps us healthy.

Some information on nervous system should also be known. Vagus nerves are known as Jeevakaraka. One of it's branch is connected to heart which controls our heart beat. If our body does not contain enough energy it may effect these nerves and in turn our heartbeat. This is a very minute thing and generally it is neglected, but one who knows Aayurveda will know this. Such minute health related information was found by our Rishis and has been given to us. They coated these health related remedies with Dharma and brought it to world in the form of ritual.

After reading all this I hope you will celebrate Sankranti with perfect understanding and not just for the sake it is to be done. Now don't you feel how great scientists our Rishis were?

With Regards
