You might have already tried, but does sudo heimdall detect work?

I'll guess any proper phone should work fine, unless they use non-standard USB there. A easy way is to run "dmesg" to see the kernel logs before and after few seconds of plugging in the device.

this command is not detecting my mobile (when it is in recovery mode). 

Do you know anyone who have done flashing on Linux . Is USB drivers required , as Linux detects all USB ?
