To summarize - author notes that Google Fiber is delayed, and
speculates that this delay may be consistent with previous behavior in
which they have threatened telcos.

While reviewing the article, I also followed a link to an earlier
(2/10) interview with Minnie Ingersoll, the Google Product Manger for
the Access group (which include the Google Fiber project and others):

Don't think it affects us too much, but the above seemed to be worth
passing on.

FWIW, spokesman Dan Martin of Google told Joanna Sullivan for her BBJ
Editor's Notebook last week that the announcement is still set for
“early this year.”

We are less than a week away from 2Q2011, which for some marks the end
of "early this year." And TOMORROW is the 1 year anniversary of the
due date for Google Fiber submissions. So one teeny tiny part of my
brain speculated that JUST MAYBE today or Monday could be the day.

A few weeks ago I wrote a short piece pointing out that Baltimore
probably better off viz its broadband future than most cities vying
for Google Fiber. http://tomloveland.com/broadband-update-201102/ If
Google skips over us (heaven forbid), we shouldn't wallow in sorrow.
Rather, we should redouble our efforts to leverage the fiber assets we
do have.

Even if Google does come, it won't be a panacea for all in our
community. We'll still have lots to do to extend coverage to every
business and citizen.

Thanks for the post, Gary!

Upon further review, the Google Fiber situation reminds me of the childhood story "Stone Soup."  Reading it as a kid, I thought that the soldiers who brought the stone were con men, scoring a free meal just by rolling a big rock into town - everyone else provides the pot, water, meat, veggies, etc.

Years later,I looked the book up on Amazon.  I was shocked to see that many reviewers saw the story not as a scam but a wonderful display of communitarianism; after all, the townspeople were better of with the shared soup than they were before.

The musical "The Music Man" explores the same space.

Not really sure what to make of this, but suspect that such thoughts are probably best left as an exercise to the reader.
