Unable to login in with either password, Apple ID, or Recovery Key

My wife has a late 2013, 21.5 inch iMac. Every so often she receives a scam alert that her that she needs to contact Apple Support by clicking the link provided. We know it is a scam. In the past we shut her computer down briefly and them restarted with no problem.

Today she received the scam message, and we shut her computer down. This time however, when we attempt to type in her password, the screen stays blank. It will not show her Recovery Key or her Apple ID.  Any suggestions?

I know it is probably time to replace her computer. She has an iPad that she can use to email and search the internet which is about all she does.
