Dear all,

A quick reminder that there is just one week remaining to apply for our WBP funded Training Courses. These courses are organised to stimulate recording interest and generate biological records for under recorded species groups.

Booking is essential, and forms must be returned by next Friday, 24th June. Many thanks to those who have already sent in their application form, you will hear from us by 29th June if you have secured a place.

The courses this year are as follows:

Coal Spoil Biodiversity

Location: Dare Valley Country Park
Trainers: Liam Olds & Richard Wistow (RCTCBC)
Level: Beginner
Come and join us at Dare Valley  with Coal Spoil biodiversity experts Liam Olds and Richard Wistow, and learn about this varied and unique habitat found throughout the Welsh valleys. The course will be both field and classroom based, and include guidance on identifying some of the fascinating species found in this habitat.

Umbellifers (Apiaceae)
Date: Wednesday 27th July 2016, 10am - 4pm
Available places: 10
Location: Gwent Levels (several locations TBC)
Trainers: Steph Tyler & Elsa Wood (VC35 Recorders - Plants)
Level: Beginner
Umbellifers are often regarded as a tricky plant family to master.  Join experienced plant recorders Steph and Elsa and learn how to separate the different species.  The day will spent entirely in the field, and may involve travelling to multiple locations.

Introduction to Leafhoppers, Planthoppers and Spittlebugs
Date:  Saturday 3rd September 2016, 10am - 4pm
Available places:
10
Location: National Museum Wales [NMW], Cardiff
Trainer: Dr Mike Wilson (NMW)                                                                       Level: Beginner
Join Hemiptera expert Mike Wilson to learn about the ecology and identification of hoppers. The day will involve studying the NMW’s collection using microscopes, plus an example of genitalia dissection.  Ongoing identification of this group will require the collection of specimens; please only apply if you are comfortable with this.

Fungi: Getting Started with a Microscope
Date: Sunday 11th September 2016, 10am - 3pm
Available places: 8
Location: Glamorgan venue TBC
Trainer: Mike Bright (Glamorgan Fungus Group)
Level: Beginner
Come and join us to learn everything you need to know to get started with fungal microscopy! This course will be classroom based and Mike will cover topics such as preparing slides, using stains and reagents, what microscopic features to look for and how to measure spores.

Booking for these courses are essential and, as usual, attendees will be selected through a very scientific "names out of a hat" method! If you are interested in attending any of the courses, please complete the attached application form and return to SEWBReC by Friday 24th June 2016.

Successful applicants will be advised by 29th June; if you have not heard from us by then, please assume you have not got a space.

Kind regards,

The SEWBReC Team
