Another Idea for Nephi’s Ship

Have you ever wondered what the ship looked like that took Lehi and
his entourage safely across the ocean? Built under the supervision of
a young man with no sea-going experience and reluctantly aided by
dysfunctional brothers and relatives, the vessel proved to be equal to
the challenge.

Dr. Stephen L. Carr, senior editor at BMAF and a man with many
interests and author of books and articles ranging from the birds
found on Lehi’s trail in Arabia to the old railroads of Utah, has
wrestled with this problem for decades. He comments that “the boat or
ship probably did not look like the well-known picture painted by
Arnold Friberg, which has the appearance of a great Spanish galleon.”
The record states that it was built using plans emanating from the
Lord. That doesn’t tell us much except that Nephi had no prior ideas
of shipbuilding and the design was one that would safely deliver the
group half way around the world.

What tools would have been needed to build a vessel? Whatever they
were, they had to be fabricated on the spot using raw materials found
near their departure point. Nephi consulted the Father in prayer. He
did not ask how to build the ship, instead he asked the Lord to show
him where to find ore from which to fashion tools with which to build
the ship. Crude copper or iron tools would be the only tools that
Nephi would have been able to fashion with a crude furnace or smelting
facility. We now know that there are deposits of both copper and iron
ore near the proposed departure point.

Dr. Carr has travelled twice to Wadi Sayq, in the extreme south of
what is now Oman, the proposed departure point and describes it in
words and pictures in this adventurous article. In addition, he has
proposed a boat design that appears to be buildable by non sea-going
folk and also functional in reaching their promised land. Scale
models allow you to study the boat from all angles.

vessel.
