Dear Westover Village and Bluemont Civic Associations,
We wanted to let you know about a food drive that Cub Scout Pack 632 will be conducting on Nov. 12 in neighborhoods that are part of your Civic Associations. If you could broadcast this information to your Civic Association listservs, we would appreciate it.
Scouting for Food is a food drive in which Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts all around the DC area collect food donations for local area food banks. We support over 3,500 families in Arlington by donating the food we collect to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). Over 60,000 lbs. of food was collected last year during the Scouting for Food drive.
Pack 632 will be covering an area that includes parts of your neighborhoods to collect food. Pack 632 is made up of Cub Scouts from Arlington; most of the boys go to ATS elementary school. Last year, Pack 632 collected 1,500 lbs. of food from your neighborhoods!
On Nov. 5, our Cub Scouts (with some help by parents) will distribute “Scouting for Food” bags to homes across your neighborhoods. On Nov. 12, the Cub Scouts (again with some help from parents) will come through the neighborhoods to collect donations.
Donations should be placed in the Scouting for Food bag that will be distributed to houses in the neighborhood and the bags should be placed outside the front door by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, Nov. 12. On the morning of Sat., Nov. 12, our Cub Scouts will come by to collect donations, starting around 8:30 a.m. Our Cub Scouts will be in pairs, in uniform, and will be accompanied by parents in automobiles. The Cub Scouts will not be knocking on doors to solicit contributions. If a donation is not picked up by noon on the 12th, please contact me at
daniel...@sutherland.com, and we will come by to pick up the missed donation and take it to the food bank.
Canned or boxed goods are preferred (pasta, peanut butter, breakfast food, tuna, soup, fruit, beans). Plastic jars are fine but please do not donate glass jars, paper products or toiletries (AFAC’s system isn’t set up for those). The most needed food items are canned proteins (tuna, chicken, salmon), low sodium soup, cooking oil in plastic bottles, and peanut butter in plastic jars. For more information about AFAC, please visit
www.afac.org. If you wish to donate more than one bag of food, please put them outside your front door with note on it saying that it’s a donation to Scouting for Food.
Thank you for your very important donations to the food bank, and for helping to make this a successful service project for the Cub Scouts!
