I also find that using the "Insert HTML markup" dialogue is unreliable
for placing code in the source. Sometimes it enters a normal
space. :-(

So why not identify cases, when it does not work, and file a sound bug report?

What I see is, that entering Alt-0160 in WYSIWYG mode does result in a simple space, while entering in Source mode will look like a simple space after switching back and forth, but that space will behave like

It works similarly for   which is replaced with a small space that looks like a space in source mode.

for that matter will be completly gone, but still behave as a soft-hyphen.

A method, thas seems working to me, is to go to the "insert special character" window via keyboard and then to mark Unicode. 00AD (=soft hyphen) - insert. One can leave this window open and switch back and forth via keyboard. As the mark stays on the character, one has to just hit enter and has it.

It is not visible in source code, as the source code editor also interprets it!

Unbreakable spaces are important in French typography (before question marks, colons, and so on). They don't work properly with BlueGriffon. When Alt-0160 is used, sometimes Bluegriffon adds to the source code (that is well done) sometimes it does add a space (this is not good). It would be nice if Alt-0160 would produce a each time ! It would be also useful if one could put a non-break space with Ctrl-Alt-Space as in Microsoft Word.

The same holds for non-breaking space (00A0).

It is convenient, that both, non-breaking space and soft hyphen, lie near one another on the same line in the "insert special character" window. So one cannot switch characters without a mouse click, but one can insert a series of the same characters without a mouse klick, except the first.

OTOH it would surely be an improvement to be able to put keyboard shortcuts on special characters.

A remark: Though You don't see the soft hyphen in wysiwyg mode, You can delete it.
