Mark

In Ubuntu there are various ways to create a desktop icon but this is
probably the easiest.

I'm using the Unity shell at the moment so can't verify this is
totally
accurate but it should be - I checked on another website.

1) Find the program in the Applications menus and right click on it
2) Select 'Add this launcher to desktop'
3) A link to the application will now be on your desktop
4) You can also add a launcher to the panel, this is basically what
the
quick start was in Windows. The icon will appear in the top panel on
the
left - near the Firefox icon as I recall.

I think the problem that Bulldog has is that there is an entry, bit no
icon in the applications menu. However you can then do as you say and
create a launcher on the desktop by right clicking, then using the
desktop icon (which will be generic one), right click to properties,
click on the icon in the top left of the 1st panel of the tabbed dialog
and assign the BlueGriffon icon from the BlueGriffon/icons directory.

If you want an entry in the Unity panel on the left of your screen you
can then drag and drop it onto there, BUT you loose the icon (it goes
back to a generic one), and so far I have not found out how to edit the
icon, although I am sure there must be somewhere to do it.

If I click on the "blank" icon, it runs the application! so creating a
launcher from it still works ok.

You need to create a custom launcher to add to Unity (with the icon!):

gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/bluegriffon.desktop

Enter your admin password and then add the following to the file:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Name=BlueGriffon
Exec=<path to blue griffon>/bluegriffon
Comment[en_GB]=Blue Griffon Web Editor
Icon=<path to blue griffon>/chrome/icons/default/default32.png
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=true

You need to replace <path to blue griffon> with your installation
folder. For example if you installed to /usr/local/bin then the line
would read Exec=/usr/local/bin/bluegriffon

Use Nautilus to browse to /usr/share/applications and drag this newly
created file onto the launch bar.

Hope this helps
