There is a graphite-api compatibility layer located in contrib (https://github.com/rackerlabs/blueflood/tree/master/contrib/graphite). It makes integrating with grafana possible (just treat it as a graphite UI).

Deep, native integration (including a grafana editor) is a lot of work. I'm not aware of anybody working on it.

Gary.

Hi there,

The latest status is the Heat template that will help you spin up a Grafana instance.  Please check out the blog post here: http://bit.ly/grafana-cloudmetrics

Thank you for quick replies.

Gary,  Is there any documentation how to use graphite-api compatibility layer to monitor Blueflood metris with Grafana?

Shane, as I understand from your blog,  I need to create a Cloud Metrics account to use Grafana to monitor Blueflood metrics. We use AWS for the cloud and use an EC2 instance for the database server. Before Blueflood we tried InfluxDB and OpenTSDB to store our metrics and used Grafana to monitor the data. At this time we want to try Blueflood and decide which timeseries database we will use for production. But for monitoring we still want to use Grafana, is there any date in your schedule to full support for Grafana?

Regards,
Erdinc

Hi Erdinc,

I should have been more specific.  The blog post mentioned OpenStack Heat template: https://bitly.com/heat-grafana

This template gives you accurate instruction about how we put it together to work with Cloud Metrics.  It is not exactly what you are asking for but since Heat is part of OpenStack I hope it can still be useful for you.

It is right you need a Rackspace account to follow the instruction on the blog post.  Other than that, it is a software-as-a-service and can be used no matter where your infrastructure is.  Grafana support from Cloud Metrics is in field testing. We can discuss that topic off this thread about blueflood. Just let me know.

After we are done with our current release we can look into how that can be applied to blueflood itself.  There is no ETA on that as far as I know.

Cheers

Hi Shane,

Thank you for the explanation.  Please correct me if I misunderstood. As I understood that OpenStack Heat template is similar to AWS Cloud Formation template and we can deploy the Grafana(configured for Blueflood) to a Rackspace server with this template. I need to discuss this with my colleagues. We may move our database server to Rackspace cloud too.

Erdinc

Shane,

I talked with my colleagues. We already had a Rackspace account and a server for production. But we don't want to use this server to try Blueflood and Grafana. Because it is used for production. Is there any free tier server option in Rackspace cloud to demonstrate Blueflood and Grafana?

Regards,
Erdinc

Hi Erdinc,

I don't think there is a sever that you can spin up for free.  But if you have a Rackspace account, Cloud Metrics (http://bit.ly/rax-metrics-overview) and Cloud Monitoring are both available for you without additional charge.  The Grafana server instance cost you about $50 per month but it is just a UI. So you can actually turn it off whenever you don't need it and spend some time spinning a new one up when you need to take a look.

Sorry I don't feel right talking about Rackspace product in an open source forum.  Please send me individual email and we can take this off the list.

Cheers
